  • Ex-cons seek second chances

    Since he was released from jail in 2009 after being incarcerated for drug distribution and other crimes, Jimmy Peak has been trying to turn his life around.
    He has a job, attends church and lives on his own, but he faces a slew of obstacles that come with being an ex-convict.
    Dressed in suit and tie, Peak told those attending a Galax community meeting on Friday about the challenges he’s faced in putting his life back together.

  • Widening western 620 could take years

    HILLSVILLE — It could take years to widen part of Coulson Church Road to the west of Interstate 77’s Exit 19, according to Virginia Department of Transportation officials.
    Carroll officials continued driving towards their idea of widening both sides of Virginia 620 at Interstate 77 during their regular October meeting.
    VDOT spokeswoman Marshall Barnhill expects two things to happen to change the scope of the original plan of widening Virginia 620 east from the 77 interchange.

  • Galax battles past Grayson

     INDEPENDENCE –– Allison White was unstoppable. Harley Brewer was impenetrable.

    White put away 21 kills and Brewer stonewalled her way to 18 blocks Tuesday night as Galax took an important Mountain Empire District volleyball win, knocking off Grayson County 25-14, 20-25, 25-23, 25-15.

  • Grayson County rolls over Bland County, 56-13

     BASTIAN –– Grayson County found itself in unfamiliar territory early in its Mountain Empire District game Friday at Bland County. The atmosphere was much more recognizable soon enough.

    Trailing the Bears 7-6 after each team’s initial possession, the Blue Devils piled up 42 unanswered points before the end of the half and skated home with a 56-13 win at Dillow Memorial Field.

    First it was Princeton then it was Grayson County. You can add Galax to the list. The Maroon Tide outmuscled and outplayed the G-Men on their way to a 45-14 Mountain Empire District win on Friday night at Mitchell Stadium.

    HILLSVILLE –– Carroll County has become the latest in a long list of Richlands opponents to have left the field with a serious case of Johnson envy.

    Marshall-bound runningback Devon Johnson ran for 189 yards and two touchdowns in the first half alone, leading the Blue Tornado to a 48-23 win over the Cavaliers in a Southwest District game at Tommy Thompson Field.
