    Cancer patients and their caregivers have questions, and a volunteer organizer hopes to provide the answers.
    Pete Bramley of Fancy Gap continues to seek assistance from volunteers to compile a directory of services to meet the needs of patients and their families.
    He’s put out a call to those who can help contribute the information needed to help people at a time when they don’t need any other kind of stress.
    The disease is all too common — Bramley counted 22 people on prayer lists from his church alone who have some form of cancer.

  • Grayson court unseals five indictments


    INDEPENDENCE — Five Grayson County Circuit Court grand jury indictments have been unsealed and the suspects arrested.
    An indictment is a formal charge, not a finding of guilt.
    Indictments include:
    • Edward Dean Howard Jr., 34, of Independence — one count of assault by mob. The indictment accuses Howard of being a member of a mob to maliciously shoot, stab, cut or wound Jesus Herrera Ramirez.

  • State okays governor's school plan

    HILLSVILLE — Local educators have permission to create the 10th Virginia Governor’s STEM Academy in Twin County schools and at the Crossroads Institute, after a decision by the state Board of Education last Thursday.
    This was the fourth and final permission that Carroll County Public Schools and its partners needed to proceed with planning for the Blue Ridge Crossroads Governor’s Academy for Technical Education.

  • Brewer, Smith marry

    FRIES — Cory Shane Smith and Elena Carol Brewer were united in marriage July 31 at Grace Baptist Church in Fries.
    Pastor Ben Haga performed the double ring ceremony.

    The bride was escorted by her brother, Jamie Brewer, and given in marriage by her parents and brother.
    The bride’s parents are Doug and Glenda Forester of Galax, and the late James “Jimmy” Brewer.
    The groom’s parents are Charles and Sue Smith of Fries.
