    Galax has more than its fair share of Virginia Tech fans. There’s one Hokie the Maroon Tide faithful will probably wait to cheer for.

    Glenvar defensive standout Seth Dooley leads a big, powerful, surprisingly speedy Highlander team as it hosts Galax tonight in the season opener for both teams. The 6-foot-5, 227-pound middle linebacker was offered on the spot by Virginia Tech following a one-day camp in Blacksburg this July.

  • Cavaliers face young, big Bengals

    HILLSVILLE –– Carroll County opened its 2010 season last year with a loss to Bassett, but avenged itself 10 weeks later by ending the Bengals’ season in the Region IV Division 4 playoffs.

    The Cavaliers are hoping to get it right the first time this year.

    After a disappointing showing in a 36-7 benefit game loss at Galax last week, Carroll County opens its 2011 season for real tonight when the Cavaliers head down to Henry County for a nondistrict battle with the Bengals.

  • Devils cross border for opener

    INDEPENDENCE –– Grayson County opens its 2011 schedule Friday with a trip to Sparta for a nondistrict game against Alleghany, N.C. First, the Blue Devils must get their collective heads to stop spinning after Friday’s wild benefit game win in Floyd.

  • Leadership Institute to begin in September

    The fourth annual “Twin County Leadership Institute” class will begin meeting on Sept. 9.

    The sessions are an opportunity for area residents to learn about local community leadership this fall.

    Sponsors are Wytheville Community College, Crossroads Institute, the Virginia Cooperative Extension, and the Twin County Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Paternal great-grandparents are Inez Huff and Alma Lee Sizemore and the late Ed Huff and Kyle Sizemore. Maternal great-grandparents are John B.
