    An 80th birthday party was given for John LaGrasse of Woodlawn at the West Galax United Methodist Church fellowship room by his wife Pat and sons, Andrew, Matthew and David of Long Island, N.Y.

  • Ogle, McGuire announce engagement

    Jared Christopher Ogle and Tammy Crowder McGuire announced their engagement.
    Ogle is the son of Donnie and Janet Ogle and the grandson of the late Elmo and Mary Jane Ogle, Ruth Aldred and the late Paul Aldred.

    McGuire is the daughter of Kathy and Frank Delp and the late Dana Crowder. She is the granddaughter of Harold and Geneva Funk and the late Junior Cornett, Robert and Shelby McLean and the late Melvin Crowder.
    A spring wedding is planned.

  • Hanks, Stricker to marry

    Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Hanks of Williamsburg announce the engagement of their daughter, Elizabeth, to Jeffrey Stricker, son of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Stricker, formerly of Williamsburg.
    Hanks is the granddaughter of the late Rufus and Izetta Crowder and the late Edgar and Elizabeth Hanks, all of Carroll County.

    Stricker is the grandson of Irene Hiatt and the late Samuel Hiatt, also of Carroll County.
    Both Hanks and Stricker are 1999 graduates of Jamestown High School.

  • Byrds celebrate 50th wedding anniversary

    Mr. and Mrs. John Byrd recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
    He is a native of Baywood and was graduated from Galax High School in 1951. Lorena Byrd is a native of Sheldon, Iowa.

    They met while students at Milligan College, Tenn., and were married in Paris, France, where he was stationed with the U.S. Army.
    John Byrd taught at Galax High School 1958-1966. Lorena held temporary teaching positions at Fries High School, Independence High School, Oakland Elementary, and Galax High.

  • A key player in old time



    Still well remembered in music circles as a unique old time piano player, Haywood Blevins tells stories and tickles the keys in three CDs released by his daughter. Frances Moore, now of Wilkesboro, N.C., released the recordings as a tribute to her father, the well-respected musician who was born in Baywood in 1906.

  • Did they or didn't they? Farm tax causes confusion

    HILLSVILLE — The president of Carroll County Farm Bureau recently thanked the Carroll County board for cutting the farm equipment tax in half and a farmer said she didn't think that it was fair to the citizens — but the supervisors weren't all that sure whether they'd ever approved that action.
    Confusion became evident at a February meeting as Supervisor Sam Dickson expressed a need to correct the record about the decision that the county board had made at its January meeting.

  • Developer charged with embezzling


    An Ashe County, N.C., developer who has connections with two developments in Grayson County has been arrested and charged with six counts of embezzlement.
    Lt. William Sands of the Ashe County Sheriff’s Department said Joe B. Weddington, 63, of Crumpler, N.C., was arrested Feb. 16.
    Sands said Weddington’s arrest came after a month-long investigation. The arrest was the result of $15,406.55 that Weddington allegedly converted to his own use.

  • Woman falls, struck by car

    HILLSVILLE — A Hillsville woman fell in a bank parking lot and while on the ground was hit by a vehicle Saturday at 11:55 a.m.
    According to a report from the Hillsville Police Department, Lois Akers fell at the Bank of America parking lot on Main Street and was unable to get to her feet.
    Police weren't certain why the woman could not get up again, but while she was down, the driver of a 1999 Chevy Blazer tried to back up and could not see Akers.
    Akers was struck. She was flown out by helicopter for medical attention.
