      HILLSVILLE — Carroll officials have approved state-directed real estate tax relief for certain veterans and a local initiative to increase benefits for qualifying elderly and disabled citizens.
    The supervisors made the changes at their July 11 meeting, after holding a public hearing.

  • Grayson Republicans to hold mass meeting to select candidates

    INDEPENDENCE — Grayson Republicans will officially select candidates for the Nov. 8 general election at a mass meeting set for Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Grayson County High School Auditorium.
    Several announced candidates who are running without opposition for nomination include:
    • Commissioner of Revenue — Larry Bolt.
    • Oldtown District Supervisor — Kenneth Belton.
    • Providence District Supervisor — John Brewer.
    • Sheriff — Mark Burnett.

  • Animals For Adoption This Week


    These animals are waiting for homes at the Galax-Carroll-Grayson Regional Animal Shelter, at 201 Fair St. in Galax. Hours are 1-5 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday and 1-4 p.m. Friday-Saturday. For more information,
    call 236-8501. Strays without collars are held five days before they are available for adoption. Strays with collars are held for 10 days. The owners of animals with tags are contacted immediately. Animals become available for adoption on a first-come, first-served basis.

    The only difference I can see between Grayson and Carroll counties is that Carroll has more revenue to squander because of its proximity to I-77. The caliber of those in charge is no greater or less than the leaders of Grayson County. So, Grayson has this new school in the area with the lowest population density and Carroll has the “Bypass From Nowhere” and Wildwood.

  • Virginia Tourism mascot to be at Lambsburg Welcome Center

    On Saturday from noon to 4 p.m., Virginia’s lovable tourism mascot, Trip Heartmann, will make a special appearance, giving away free “Virginia is for Lovers” T-shirts to the first 50 families who stop and take a picture with the LOVE artwork installed at the Lambsburg Welcome Center on Interstate 77 at Exit 1 in Carroll County.

    Visitors are invited to take a family picture in front of the artwork and share with family and friends on Facebook and Twitter.
