    The City of Galax is encouraging residents who use hypodermic needles, syringes and lancets to dispose of sharps in a safer manner, after two sanitation crew members were stuck by used needles when collecting trash.

    Many of us in the Virginia General Assembly have once again taken action this year to deal with the burden of a federal failure.
    We have submitted proposed legislation concerning illegal immigration — a growing problem in the commonwealth.
    The fact is that illegal immigration costs the average American taxpayer $1,117 per year, and costs Virginia nearly $2 billion per year.

    BUENA VISTA –– The name of the town means “Good View.” You can see all the way to the state tournament from here.

    Galax made the lengthy journey to Parry McCluer High School and was rewarded with its first trip to the state tournament in 20 years Thursday, controlling Covington from start to finish for a 45-39 win in the Region C Division 1 girls’ semifinals.

    Galax earned a spot in this week’s state tournament with the win, regardless of the outcome of Saturday’s region title game with Bath County.

    BUCHANAN –– James River doesn’t have all the components still in place from last year’s Group A Division 2 state championship team. Friday, though, the Knights had more than enough to get the job done.

  • UPDATE – Tide boys region champs

    Galax took a double-digit lead three minutes into the second quarter and hammered Eastern Montgomery 64-46 in the Region C Division 1 boys' championship game Saturday at Parry McCluer High School.

    Lawrence Parsons led a balanced scoring attack with 15 points for Galax, which will face Region D runner-up Twin Springs either Friday or Saturday at the Salem Civic Center in the Group A state quarterfinals.

  • UPDATE – Tide boys in, Devils out

    Galax's boys basketball team dismantled Bath County 61-36 in the Region C Division 1 semifinals Friday, earning a trip to the state tournament. Galax plays Eastern Montgomery tonight (Saturday) for the region championship at Parry McCluer High School. Tip-off is approximately 7:30-7:45. It will be the fourth straight meeting between Galax and EastMont for the region title.

  • Wind damages home, car


    June Douglas stands on her front porch as she looks at the damage caused by high winds. Her home on Boxwood Lane in Galax and her grandson's car were damaged Friday. Douglas, who is disabled, said she had just replaced her roof last summer. It was torn off, and she doesn't have any homeowner's insurance to have it repaired. Also, debris from her home busted the windshield on her grandson's vehicle.

  • Power outage ends Carroll school day

    HILLSVILLE — Carroll County Public Schools will shut down early Friday after a power outage, school officials say.A piece of equipment on a power poll is broken and can't be fixed soon enough, said Carroll schools Superintendent Greg Smith. "They won't be able to get it fixed until 1:30."
