  • Readers' Hotline 8/11/14

    Enforcement zone
Another series of wrecks on Fancy Gap Mountain on Interstate 77. When is our law enforcement going to realize we need to patrol the mountain instead of doing all the radar between the Fancy Gap and Hillsville exits? We need more law enforcement on the mountain.

  • Officer imposter, abduction suspect in custody

INDEPENDENCE — An Independence man who police say impersonated an officer and held three people against their will is now in custody.

The Grayson County Sheriff’s Office put out an alert on Aug. 6 for John David Anderson, 43, who was wanted in connection with an incident the previous day on Fulton Road near Independence.

Grayson Sheriff Richard Vaughan said that Anderson approached the people from the woods outside their home and held them at gunpoint.

  • The signs point toward change

Anyone who has driven regularly between Hillsville and Galax along U.S. 58 for the last 20-some odd years probably keeps an eye out for the marquee at Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church – at least, anyone other than serial texters and that one doofus in the MG with the paperback novel on his steering wheel who nearly bought someone a new mailbox and me a new fender.

    2009

The first team to represent the area in a Dixie world series in 20 years, Carroll County was eliminated after suffering losses to Collierville, Tenn., and Duplin County, N.C. in Skipperville, Ala.

  • Sloss, Carroll making early strides

HILLSVILLE –– Carroll County hasn’t yet played its first football game of the 2014 season, but the Cavaliers have already chalked up a win.

The school had to order some extra football helmets. One might say that it’s a win and that the Cavaliers covered the spread, as some of those new pots were size XL.

Including a JV squad that, in terms relative to recent years, is downright massive with numbers in the mid-40s, it looks like the kids at Carroll County are giving the new guy a chance.

  • Origins of 'Hillbilly' music found in Galax area

There’s no short answer to explain how “hillbillies” invented American music, local music historian Joe Wilson says.

It’s “all the pieces of the truth that fit together” that allow him to tell the story of where hillbilly music — old-time and, later, bluegrass — came from in about an hour, but the story is much deeper.

  • Teens involved in Carroll crash

State police and emergency officials responded to a single-vehicle accident involving four juveniles on July 2.

Police received a call at 9 p.m. to Pleasantview Road in Carroll County, after four juveniles in a pickup truck ran off the side of the road, struck a tree and overturned.

According to Virginia State Police 1st Sgt. Mike Musser, one of the juveniles was ejected from the vehicle. "One had some fairly serious injuries, but the others I don't think were injured as badly," he added.
