  • Bills call for drug testing of welfare recipients

    RICHMOND — A House of Delegates committee has advanced legislation that would require drug testing of Virginia welfare recipients, despite objections from Democrats who argued that the proposal amounts to a targeted attack on poor people.
    And, Sen. Bill Carrico (R-Grayson County) is patron of a nearly identical bill in the Virginia Senate, SB 318, which has been referred to the Committee on Rehabilitation and Social Services.

  • Governor announces training center will close in 2018

    RICHMOND — Gov. Bob McDonnell announced today that community based services will become the watchword for care for people with disabilities who were once residents of the five training centers around the state.

    A feature of the settlement with a lawsuit filed by the U.S. Department of Justice involves closing training centers, including the one in Carroll County by 2018.

    HILLSVILLE –– The Carroll County High School cheerleaders hosted their inaugural Cheerleader Alumni Night Jan. 6 during a CCHS basketball quad with Tazewell.

  • Shumate, Tide rally to win

    It was a good night to be a Shumate, especially if your first name happened to be Bailey.

    Alley Shumate of North Wilkes, N.C. racked up 22 points, but Bailey Shumate of Galax got 21 points, surpassed a milestone and enjoyed the win as the Maroon Tide stormed from behind for a 59-55 nondistrict triumph in a girls’ game Monday night.

    The Galax Shumate topped 1,000 points for her career while leading a comeback that saw the Maroon Tide rally from a 15-point second-period deficit to avenge an earlier loss to the Vikings.

  • Wright, Linkous announce engagement

    Mr. and Mrs. Richard “Butch” Wright of Rural Retreat announce the engagement of their daughter, Cyndi Leigh Wright, to Timothy Adam Linkous, son of Larry Linkous Sr. and Sandra Linkous of Speedwell.

    Wright is the granddaughter of Charles “Puffy” and Doris Wright, Okey King and the late George King, all of Rural Retreat.
    Linkous is the grandson of the late F.J. and Nina Bell linkous of Speedwell and the late John and Lucy Shipwash of Ivanhoe.
    A May 26 wedding in Rural Retreat is planned.

  • Shinault, Jones marry

    Samantha Dawn Shinault and Corporal David Andrew Jones were united in marriage Dec. 22, 2011, by the Rev. Samuel Blevins at Hillcrest Baptist Church in Galax.
    The bride is the daughter of Dorothy Sue Shinault and Cecil Eugene Shinault of Galax.
    She graduated from Galax High School in 2009, and attends Wytheville Community College in the nursing program.
    The groom is the son of Rhonda Carper and is the stepson of Tony Carper, both of Galax.
    He graduated from Carroll County High School in 2008.
