    Will Carroll County and Hillsville's national notoriety forever be based on the controversy that surrounds the commercial breeding of dogs?

    Right now, it looks like once being the home to sizable breeding operations continue to define this place — even though those businesses have apparently been shuttered here.

    Two years after animal advocates took covert video at a breeding operation in Hillsville, our localities can't seem to escape the issue nipping at its heels.

    We will bear burden of health care

    Within the health care bill under debate in the U.S. Senate are requirements for states to take on more expense for Medicaid.

    Federal law requires state and local governments to balance their budgets every year, but there is no such requirement for the federal government, which is why the feds can keep printing more money or borrowing it from another country to spend outlandishly.

  • Hunter shot, in critical condition

    A Galax man is in critical condition after an accidental shooting in Grayson County on Saturday.

    Lt. Rex Hill of the Virginia Department of Inland Fisheries said Jose Lopez-Cruz, 36, was part of a group that was hunting for deer on Andrews Farm in Grayson County.

    Hill said Lopez-Cruz was not hunting, but was coming up on the group when Edward Culler, 55, mistook him for a deer.

    Lopez-Cruz was airlifted to North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, where he was listed in critical condition Monday afternoon.

  • Country 'Idol' to perform in Galax

    Fifth season “American Idol” contestant and country music artist Kellie Pickler is scheduled to perform at Galax First Baptist Church on Dec. 14 as part of the annual Morgan Shepherd Charitable Fund visit to the Twin Counties.

    The concert at 4 p.m. is free and open to the public.

    The Dec. 14 event will also include the band Mountain Creek Harmony, "Mayberry Deputy" David Browning and Christian comedian Barry McGee.

  • Remote diagnosis available

    Twin County Regional Hospital began using a new teleneurology program Tuesday morning, which will allow medical staff to rapidly connect with board-certified neurologists using videoconferencing at the patient's bedside.

    TCRH, in conjunction with Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C., can now provide a high level of emergency stroke and critical neurology care 24 hours a day.

  • End of the road for car tax relief?

    One of the sacred cows in Virginia’s budget — car tax relief for residents — is among items that outgoing Gov. Tim Kaine and his team are analyzing as they look to plug a state revenue hole estimated at $2.7 billion to $3.5 billion.

    Particulars of the discussions are hazy as budget talks occur among a select group of high-ranking state officials. A request for documents about the proposal made through the state open records law was denied.

  • Carroll girls rally past Pulaski, Tide girls pick up first win

    DUBLIN -- Carroll County overcame an early 10-point deficit and remained undefeated with a 63-53 win over Pulaski County in a nondistrict girls’ game Monday night. The Cougars (0-3) jumped on the Cavaliers (3-0) early, leading 18-8 after the first period, but Carroll County began working its way back in the second quarter, eventually taking the lead in the third by outscoring Pulaski County 19-9.
