  • JoyFest balloon rides uplift memory of fallen hero

    WOODLAWN — Three years ago, when the Joy Ranch children’s home in Carroll County added a quilt auction and children’s inflatables to its annual open house and alumni reunion, organizers wanted a catchy name and an appealing attraction for the newly created event.
    Thus “JoyFest” began, with the theme of “Up!” in its first year and hot-air ballooning activities as its leading feature.

  • Squealers closes restaurant, catering and cafe carry on

    While Squealers restaurant, formerly located on East Stuart Drive in Galax, had to shut its doors last week, owner Mark Davis said his catering business and Squealers Cafe at the Crossroads Institute are going strong.
    For the past two years, Davis’ restaurant has offered some delicious helpings of barbecue, ribs, beef brisket, chicken and burgers. But in a tough economy and with the competition of other area restaurants, he said it just became too difficult to remain in business.

  • Carroll soldier recovers from blast

    SEATTLE, Wash. — The parents of U.S. Army PFC Eric Sabath report that the solider remains in good spirits while receiving medical treatment for injuries to his feet from an improvised explosive device while serving in Afghanistan.
    Sabath is well-known in Hillsville and surrounding communities as a 2009 graduate of Carroll County High School and as an employee of the Hillsville Subway for five years, said his mother, Yvette Sabath.
    She spoke to The Gazette on Monday, while visiting the soldier in a Washington state hospital.

    Taelynn Isabella Mundy celebrated her second birthday July 2 with a party at McDonald’s. Her sisters Hope Gaynor and Timber Mundy helped her celebrate along with special friends and family members.

    She is the daughter of Tammy L. Liddle and Tim L. Mundy of Woodlawn. Maternal grandparents are Brenda Liddle and Emory Bearden of Woodlawn, and Charles Liddle of Galax. Paternal grandparents are Don and Mabelene Beverly of Cana, and Wayne Mundy of Cana.

    Cassidy “Cassie” Lynne Marshall turned 1 on July 23. Her birthday was celebrated with a butterfly cookout at the river. She is the daughter of Joseph and Chrissy Marshall.

    Her big sister is Izzie Marshall. Grandparents are Randy and Kim Bell and Dennis and Opie Marshall. Great-grandparents are M.C. and Irene Bell, the late Verna Liddle, O’Neal and O’Needa Terry, and the late Virgil and  Patty Marshall.
