  • Chilhowie pulls away from Devils

    INDEPENDENCE -- Grayson County trailed Chilhowie by just five points midway through the fourth quarter, but the Warriors pulled away for a 32-20 nondistrict win Friday at Bill Strong Field. The Blue Devils (0-2) were down 25-6 following Tyler Austin’s 3-yard scoring run and Daniel Ashby’s PAT early in the second half, but would soon be within one possession of the lead.

  • Cavs win on miracle finish

    STUART -- Little did Carroll County coach Tom Hale know at the time, but a conversation he had back in January proved to be the main difference between an 0-2 record and one of the best finishes in Cavalier football history. January was when Tyler Reavis, then a junior who hadn’t played football since his freshman year, approached Hale and said he’d like to play football as a senior.

  • GUITAR STAR: Henderson subject of film

    Wayne C. Henderson has a festival that bears his name each fall in Grayson County, and he is known throughout the musical world as a master musician and instrument maker from the small community of Rugby.

    This Thursday, Henderson will be able to add another accomplishment to his career when a documentary film showcasing him premieres at the Rex Theater in Galax.

    “From Wood to Singing Guitar” is an Appalshop documentary film showing Henderson, a skilled craftsman and respected musician by his teenage years.

  • Galax schools make the grade

    Galax City Public Schools is one of just 25 Virginia school divisions — out of more than 100 — in which all schools met the 29 Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) performance benchmarks established by the federal No Child Left Behind Act.

    Of these divisions, Galax was one of only 21 divisions in Virginia where all schools and the division as a whole made AYP for 2008-2009.
