  • Cavaliers control Tazewell

    HILLSVILLE -- After dominating the first half in terms of time of possession, Carroll County gradually pulled away from Tazewell in the second half and took home a 33-14 win in a Southwest District game at Tommy Thompson Field. For aficionados of ground control offense, the first offensive series of the game was a thing of beauty.

  • Bobcats throttle Tide, 42-0

     With both Radford and Galax entering Friday night’s game winless on the 2009 season, one was bound to collect its first win — unfortunately for Galax, the Bobcats scored early, quickly and often en route to a 42-0 nondistrict pounding of the Maroon Tide on its home field.

  • Devils drop another close one, falling 7-0 to Highlanders

     INDEPENDENCE -- Undefeated Glenvar faced a fired-up Grayson County defense last Friday night and managed to escape with a 7-0 nondistrict victory on a rainy night at Bill Strong Field.

     SPARTA, N.C. -- Galax wrapped up the Mountain Empire District regular season golf championship Tuesday, taking a three-team match hosted by Grayson County at New River Country Club.

  • Huffman wins Elk Creek Nostalgia race

    ELK CREEK -- The Labor Day weekend excitement got underway last Saturday with more than 190 racers filling the pits at Elk Creek Dragway, including 30 of the wildest Nostalgia racers on the East Coast. In the final round of eliminations for the Nostalgia class, Ronnie Huffman of Roanoke steered his 1957 Chevy to the win, topping Preston Prater of Goode, behind the wheel of a 1932 Ford.

  • Maroon Tide wins third straight

     Galax ran its win streak to three matches and in the process opened Mountain Empire District play in strong fashion, knocking off defending district champion Fort Chiswell 25-18, 25-17, 25-7 in an MED match Thursday in Galax.

  • Rural Retreat survives Grayson

    RURAL RETREAT -- How do you turn the ball over seven times and still win a football game?  That’s the question the Grayson County Blue Devils were asking themselves last Friday night after losing to Rural Retreat 14-6 in a nondistrict game.  It was truly a battle of miscues for both teams.

    Galax was overmatched by a powerful Eastern Montgomery Friday night en route to a 41-6 thumping of the Maroon Tide in its first home game of the season. The Tide (0-3) fell behind early and its secondary was no match for the Mustangs’ dynamic quarterback Shawn Christian, a 6-foot-3 160-pound junior who racked up 218 yards and three touchdowns through the air.     HILLSVILLE -- The 69-yard touchdown run by fullback Greg Lee was certainly a welcome sight to a Christiansburg team that led Carroll County by just three points in the fourth quarter Friday night.
