  • Carroll teachers, staff could get raises

    HILLSVILLE — Carroll supervisors gave the county school board a homework assignment on Monday night — figure out how to use surplus funds carried over from this fiscal year to pay for a 3 percent salary increase for all employees.
    School board members and administrators came before the supervisors Monday night to present Carroll’s proposed education budget for 2011-2012.
    Before the meeting, Schools Superintendent Greg Smith noted that this was to be the third consecutive spending plan without a salary increase.

    Riley Grace Anders celebrated her second birthday with a Chuggington party at Rockin Robins Daycare with family and friends. Her parents are Tiffany Jones of Elk Creek and Justin Anders of Rugby.

    Her grandparents are Jimmy and Michele Jones of Independence and John and Leona Anders of Rugby. Her great-grandmother is Virginia Ruth Sutherland of Fries.

    Jaelyn McKensi Bell celebrated her seventh birthday Feb. 24 with family and friends at a pool party. She is the daughter of Brent Bell and Amanda Bell.

    She is the granddaughter of Randy and Kim Bell, Gary Elliott and Judy Elliott. Her great-grandparents are M.C. and Irene Bell and Billie Johnson.

  • Krejci, Waller engagement announced

    Mr. and Mrs. Steve Krejci of Woodlawn announced the engagement of their daughter, Ashley Elizabeth, to Andrew Seth Waller, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Waller of Mount Airy, N.C.
    A June wedding is planned.

    Krejci is a 2010 graduate of Carroll County High School and is a student at Wytheville Community College while being employed at Subway.
    Waller is a 2010 graduate of Mount Airy High School and is enlisted in the U.S. Army.

  • Maroon Tide batters Buffaloes

     FLOYD –– Travis Garvey and Travis Cockerham each launched a two-run home run Thursday as Galax pounded Floyd County 14-2 in a five-inning, nondistrict baseball game.

    The Maroon Tide (2-1) jumped on the Buffaloes for eight runs in the first two innings without the long-ball fireworks. Garvey cracked his two-run shot in the fourth and Cockerham added his in the fifth.

    Garvey also doubled and was 2-for-2 with four RBIs for Galax. Cockerham drove in three and was 3-for-4 while Jacob Woodel and Jonathon Alouf were each 2-for-3.
