    Circuit Court

    These marriage licenses were recorded Oct. 20-Nov. 18 in the office of Susan M. Herrington, clerk of the Grayson County Circuit Court, Independence:
    David Matthew Lineberry, 19, and Tanisha Ann Simmons, 19, both of Fries.

  • Fire destroys home on Cavalier Drive

    HILLSVILLE — Four fire departments and about 40 volunteers responded to a blaze at 1561 Cavalier Drive at about 6:40 p.m. on Jan. 6.
    Hillsville received assistance from Laurel Fork, Willis and Barren Springs fire departments to put out the double-wide home that belonged to Jennifer Frost, according to Hillsville Assistant Chief Mike Musser.
    The residents were out at the time the fire started. When they returned and circled around the house, they found fire and smoke coming from the rear of the structure.

  • Cavs 3-for-3 against Grayson

    HILLSVILLE –– With Grayson County comprising one-third of Carroll County’s nine-game schedule thus far, the Cavaliers are probably ready to see a fresh face across the court for a change. With three losses to Carroll County in Grayson's last five games, the Blue Devils are probably downright sick of the Cavaliers.

    The third meeting in the last 19 days between the two schools produced the same result as the first two as the Cavaliers swept the season series with a 68-51 win in a nondistrict game Wednesday night.

  • Tide, Cavaliers pound Tazewell

     TAZEWELL –– Galax obliterated Tazewell in the first and fourth quarters, rolling to a nondistrict 79-56 win Wednesday over the Bulldogs.

    The Maroon Tide (4-0) jumped out to a 21-7 lead after one quarter of play and finished the game by dominating the fourth period 24-9.

    Five players hit double figures for the Maroon Tide, led by Austin Pack and Lawrence Parsons with 18 points each. Devonte McKinney scored 13 points while Deion George and Eddie Hanks chipped in 12 points each.

  • VHSL poised for shift to 6-division system

    CHARLOTTESVILLE ––The Virginia High School League is a big step closer to moving from three classifications to six while significantly reshaping current district alignments, beginning in the 2013-14 school year.

    An ad hoc task force of the VHSL Executive Committee on Wednesday released data from a Dec. 19 meeting that sets parameters for the first major realignment of VHSL schools since 1970, when the league adopted the current three-classification system.
