    House passes repeal of handgun purchase limit

    RICHMOND ― The House of Delegates passed legislation Feb. 1 to repeal Virginia’s one-per-month limit on handgun purchases, a law that has been on the books for nearly two decades.
    House Bill 940 passed by a vote of 66-32 following a brief floor debate in which an opponent of the bill argued that Virginia would again become a haven for gun runners if it allows unlimited handgun purchases.

  • Grayson grand jury issues 29 indictments


    INDEPENDENCE — A Grayson County Circuit Court grand jury met last Friday and returned 29 indictments against 10 people.
    A Troutdale man, Frank Jermaine Valentine, 28, was indicted on a charge of abducting a 15-year-old juvenile, according to the arrest warrant.
    Valentine was arrested by Cpl. Adam Horton of the Grayson County Sheriff’s Department and placed in the New River Valley Regional Jail in Dublin.

  • Turns 90

    Goldie Austin celebrated her 90th birthday Jan. 7, 2012, with a party at Woodlawn School cafeteria. Approximately 100 attended the party given by her son and daughter-in-law, Garfield and Sharon Austin along with her friends.

    Austin holds her cake with a then (age 18) and now photo. Her smile from both pictured is the same today.

  • Lineberry, James to marry

    Daryl and Rhonda James announce the engagement of their daughter, Jessica Ellen James, to Jeffrey Wayne Lineberry, son of Wayne and Lisa Lineberry.
    Lineberry is a 2007 graduate of Grayson County High school. He is employed with Asplundh Tree Expert Co.

    James is a 2008 graduate of Grayson County High School. She is employed with Virginia’s Home Health and Hospice in Rural Retreat and is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in nursing at King College.
    A March 31 wedding is planned at Baptist Union church in Troutdale. Friends and family are invited.

    Hayden Thomas Blevins celebrated his third birthday Dec. 10 with a Toy Story party at Pizza Hut with his family. He is the son of Jason and Alison Blevins of Galax.

    His grandparents are Jim and Brenda Blevins of Ennice and Ray and Nonnie Plummer of Troutdale.

  • Turns four

    Jake Burcham turned four Dec. 29. He celebrated with a Cars party with family and friends. He is the son of Donald and Machelle Burcham.

    His maternal grandparents are Opal Wilson and the late George Wilson. His paternal grandparents are Shirley Burcham and the late Kenneth Burcham.
