    BUENA VISTA -- Glenvar came on strong in the championship finals and overtook Galax in the team standings to claim the Region C wrestling championship Saturday at Parry McCluer High School. The Maroon Tide led 98.5-81 after conclusion of the early rounds on Friday and still held a slim advantage entering the championship round on Saturday, but the Highlanders sent eight wrestlers to the finals to Galax’s four and won five individual championships to

  • Carroll boys ousted in SWD, Wave downs Blue Devils

    RICHLANDS -- Carroll County pulled to within two points late in the third quarter, but Richlands pulled away and notched a 65-52 win in the Southwest District tournament quarterfinals Tuesday at Richlands Middle School. Blake Tatum’s 3-pointer staked the Blue Tornado (15-3) to a 40-31 lead but Carroll County (2-18) answered with a 7-0 run and closed to 40-38.

  • Galax sweeps JV titles

    If they’re not careful, first-year Galax JV basketball coaches Mark Dixon and Beth Walker may start to think it’s supposed to be this way every year. Though their teams took different routes to get there, the two rookie Tide coaches and their respective clubs put together a couple of remarkable seasons, capped by district tournament championships Saturday at Narrows High School.

You may have been dismayed, or you may have been happy, especially you Carroll County fans who will no longer have to go to Grundy, which is also dropping to Group A status in ‘11.

    HILLSVILLE -- Should it ever field a hand grenade-throwing team or get into competitive horseshoes, Carroll County would be up there with the best of them. The Cavaliers have shown nearly all year that they can come close.

     HILLSVILLE -- Due to traffic congestion on I-77, Grundy arrived 30 minutes late for its Southwest District game at Carroll County. The Cavaliers got it over with early just the same.

  • Galax girls fall to Bland 47-36

     BLAND -- Galax couldn’t overcome a slow start and fell to Bland County 47-36 in a Mountain Empire District girls’ game Saturday.

    HILLSVILLE — An idea to add economic development tools to two Interstate 77 exits in Carroll County did not get stalled by the wayside, as elected officials announced that the state has added the two interchanges to the county's enterprise zones.

  • Chamber computer seized

    HILLSVILLE — A search warrant details the seizure of a computer from the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce office in an investigation of a cyber invasion of privacy and identity theft.

    Virginia State Police Trooper Troy Dalton sought the search warrant for computers and other electronic equipment after a complaint in December from a New River Community College student, according to the court paperwork.
