A recent graphic on a political website showed that, second only to Ohio, Virginia is the state most likely to decide the 2012 presidential election.
Virginia has already been a key state during the campaign, with President Obama’s “You didn’t build that” speech in Roanoke becoming the source of a Republican rallying cry, and Vice President Biden’s “They goin’ put y’all back in chains” tirade in Danville being another example of Joe being Joe.
Not a big deal
I just read the Hotline comment about going through the bank drive-thru and waiting for an ink pen to use. I myself have gone through the drive-thru and accidentally taken the ink pen. So, how many ink pens would a bank go through each day if each person that went through that drive-thru took an ink pen? Needless to say, this is pitiful if you have got to complain about waiting on an ink pen.
It is illegal statewide as of Sept. 1 to feed deer in Virginia until Jan. 6, 2013.
The regulation does not restrict planting of crops such as corn, wildlife food plots, and backyard habitats.
It is intended to curb artificial feeding of deer that leads to negative consequences.
Problems with feeding deer include: unnaturally increasing population numbers that damage natural habitats, increasing the likelihood for disease transmission, and increasing human-deer conflicts such as deer/vehicle collisions and diminishing the wild nature of deer.
HILLSVILLE — At the same time as Hillsville Town Council members voted to readvertise for the police chief vacancy with different educational requirements, they also set a special meeting to consider the applications for the town manager position.
“I’ve been getting a lot of telephone calls, people anxious for us to hire somebody,” Mayor Greg Crowder reported to the council and the audience Monday.
The positions of town manager and police chief have been vacant since Larry South and Steve Williams decided to resign in June.
HILLSVILLE — Shoppers by the thousands are expected to descend on the Hillsville gun show and flea market, as well as the Sylvatus flea market and numerous yard sales, this weekend.
Roads in the vicinity are expected to be clogged with shoppers galore, so the Virginia Department of Transportation issued the following traffic advisory.
Travelers heading to the annual Labor Day weekend flea market should be prepared for considerable traffic delays.
HILLSVILLE — The annual Labor Day Flea Market and Gun Show will transform Hillsville from a quiet town of 3,000 to one of the largest retail venues in the Southeast during the four-day holiday weekend.
The number of vendors of new, used and collectible stuff nearly equals the number of town residents — and attracts an estimated crowd of around half a million shoppers.
Just two miles from Interstate 77, shoppers can find virtually everything — old, kitsch, useful or totally useless.
