  • Harmon to serve 10 years

    ROANOKE — Dozens of citizens petitioned the federal court for sentencing leniency in the illegal drug case against Thomas Glen Harmon, 44, of Woodlawn.
    Dozens of signatures on petitions were submitted to U.S. Court Judge Glen Conrad in Roanoke at the Aug. 29 sentencing hearing for Harmon.
    Authorities had charged Harmon with conspiracy to distribute more than 500 grams of methamphetamine, a schedule II substance. He pleaded guilty to the charge in May, according to court documents.

    INDEPENDENCE –– It took 23 hours to get Grayson County’s nondistrict game with Chilhowie started. It took two minutes and 14 seconds to finish it off.

    In a game postponed from Friday night due to weather, Grayson scored two touchdowns in the final 2:01 of the first half and another one 13 seconds into the third quarter, steamrolling the Warriors 40-7 Saturday night at Bill Strong Field.

    When Laura George presented her proposed project, the Oracle Retreat Center, to the Grayson Board of Supervisors for approval on June 10, 2010, freedom of speech was exercised by 28 citizens.
    Sixteen others voiced their views through letters and phone calls.
    Though many of the remarks by local people expressed opposition on religious grounds, the board declined the project based on common sense building principles.

    There was thunder and lightning on the field Friday night as Galax coasted to its first win over nearby rival Floyd County since 1995, taking a 37-21 nondistrict win.

    Summer storms delayed the kickoff by 30 minutes, but the thunderous running of Tide senior Jordan Vaughan coupled with the lightning fast speed of Donte Peoples was too much for the Buffaloes.

    Floyd County (0-2) appeared ready to put up a fight against Galax, stopping the Maroon Tide on its opening possession and quickly putting up seven points of its own.
