  • Cavs, Tide pick up key district wins

    HILLSVILLE –– Any setters looking to pad their stats probably didn’t find Thursday’s Southwest District matchup with Grundy much to their liking. Those at the serving line sure had a field day, though.

    Carroll County served up a whopping 25 aces and was never threatened, rolling to a 26-4, 25-8, 25-14 win in a Southwest District volleyball match. The win was the 13th in a row without a loss for the Cavaliers, who ran their SWD record to 8-0.

  • Chamber requests investigation

    HILLSVILLE — The Virginia State Police confirmed that an investigation is underway into financial allegations at the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce.

    Sgt. Mike Conroy confirmed that chamber officials are cooperating with the investigation.

    As the state police just got the information last Monday, the investigation is just starting. Conroy estimated that a typical investigation like this takes 60 to 90 days.

  • Tide, Devils looking for a turnaround

    They call it swinging the heavy bat.

    Baseball players do it, warming up in the on-deck circle, swinging a bat with weights inside of it, or a bat with a detachable weight on the end. Swing the heavy bat long enough, and the normal bat seems light as a feather.

    Patrick County was Galax’s heavy bat, and Hazard, Ky. served as Grayson County’s donut. Because when the Maroon Tide hosts the Blue Devils Friday in the renewal of their Mountain Empire District rivalry, the load will seem a lot lighter than it has on recent Fridays.

  • Cavaliers go for sixth straight win over Marion

    HILLSVILLE –– It seems like the prudent thing to do in these days of economic downsizing –– getting to one’s destination via a smaller model than what one has grown accustomed.

    The Marion football team is no different.

    A year ago, the Scarlet Hurricane reached the Region IV Division 3 finals behind the wheel of what amounted to a Hummer and a Crown Victoria, as powerful fullback Tommy Lyon and high-performance Jordan Burrows combined for more than 2,000 rushing yards.

    This year, Marion is getting pretty much the same results from a Prius.

  • No title, but Tide plays on

    DRAPER –– For a golf team accustomed to playing for championships, second place never looked so good to Galax.

    Seemingly out of contention at one point for one of the two available state tournament berths, Galax’s superior depth came through in the form of its fifth- and sixth-seeded players, Dustin Thompson and Eddie Hanks, as the Maroon Tide squeaked into the second spot by two strokes over Radford at the Region C tournament Tuesday at Draper Valley Golf Club.

  • Littrell weighs in on closed meetings

    HILLSVILLE — As a candidate for the Carroll Board of Supervisors, Tom Littrell campaigned on having more open county meetings and using closed sessions as sparingly as possible.

    After sitting in on both open and closed sessions, Littrell the supervisor believes that county officials have correctly and appropriately used exemptions allowed by law.

    The point was raised recently by citizen Mike Goldwasser, as closed sessions have related to land deals by Carroll’s governing bodies.

  • Weststar deeds pump station to Carroll PSA

    HILLSVILLE — An arrangement between developers and Carroll County over a pumping station near Interstate 77 has been reached.

    In a press release Monday, Carroll officials said that the board of supervisors and public service authority have reached “an exceptionally reasonable agreement” regarding the pump station at the intersection of I-77 and U.S. 58.

    The pump station property was located on land that Weststar Investments LLC bought at the intersection.

  • Board seeks input on school chief hiring

    The Galax City School Board will seek citizen input on the qualifications they desire in a new schools superintendent.

    The board has started the process of hiring a new superintendent to replace Sam Cook, who will retire at the end of 2008. Cook has been a superintendent of Galax schools since July 1, 1996, and is retiring after more than 42 years in public education.

  • Dog loses leg in bear attack

    TROUTDALE — A family's dog is left with three legs after she was attacked by a bear last week within 500 feet of a popular playground where children were playing.

    Scarlett McGrady of Troutdale said it happened last Friday.

    McGrady was in Galax around 4 p.m. on Oct. 3 and called her house to tell her children she would be late getting home from work.

    “My daughter, Cheyenne answered the phone telling me that something had just happened to Xenia [the family's Siberian Husky] at the playground and she was bleeding,” she said.
