    Halloween is a fortnight’s ghostly memory away, but the superstitious still have today, Friday the 13th, to dread.

    But why does this auspicious day hold relevance?

    Surely, if the Bogeyman exists, he can’t be content to play during Halloween alone.

    Is there fact behind the bad luck occurrences or is it all just coincidence and circumstance?

    As with many things in Western culture, 13 originally got its unlucky reputation from Norse mythology — not by a guy in a hockey mask in a horror movie.

    GHS sportsmanship applauded

    This letter was addressed to Galax High School Principal Bill Sutherland and was copied to Galax school leaders.

    I am writing to share something that occurred after the Nov. 6 football game at Galax High School … because what happened is nothing I had ever experienced at any high school event.

    As I was leaving the field with three Narrows High School football assistant coaches, we walked up the steps through the lingering home crowd that had just watched a great performance from their Maroon Tide players.

  • Cavaliers open playoffs at home with Warriors

    HILLSVILLE -- Carroll County will host a playoff game for the first time since 1997 and for just the second time in school history when the Cavaliers welcome Magna Vista for a Region IV Division 4 first-round game tonight at Tommy Thompson Field. Once a mainstay in the postseason, Magna Vista (6-4) is making its first playoff appearance in three years after posting back-to-back 0-10 seasons

  • NOV. 3, 2009 ELECTION RESULTS

    Unofficial results in the gubernatorial race from Carroll County show that Republican candidate Bob McDonnell took a resounding 72.98 percent of the vote totals with 5,228.

    It was the same story in Grayson, as McDonnell managed 3,026 votes (70.29 percent). McDonnell also took Galax with 818 votes compared to 490 votes for Deeds.

    Deeds appealed to only 1,932 Carroll voters, earning 26.97 percent of the ballots cast, while gaining only 1,279 (29.70 percent) in Grayson.
