  • Woodlawn fire destroys home

    WOODLAWN — A Wednesday afternoon fire destroyed a home at 173 Arabian Lane.

    Hillsville and Galax firefighters responded to the scene, but much of the home was already consumed by the flames by the time they arrived.

    Hillsville Fire Chief Donnie Spangler said there were no injuries reported and no one was in the house at the time of the fire.

    The cause is undetermined. The house is a total loss.

    The new convenience store in Independence is beautiful, inside and out. The best part of it is when you go in and pay for your gas and shop, you do not come out smelling like a stinking cigarette. Thank God.

  • Heating assistance unfrozen

    While social services agencies and those waiting for money from the heating assistance program grew concerned about when they would receive the funds, the checks should go out as early as the end of this week, said Susan Clark, director of Galax Department of Social Services.
    The heating assistance program assists low-income households in meeting their immediate home energy needs.
    Last week, the state had sent a note to local social services that the program was on delay in Washington until Congress could complete the appropriation process.

    Justin Keith Hudson and Michelle Lynn Mabry were united in marriage Nov. 3, 2011, at Woodlawn Methodist Church.

    James Breece Roten “J.B.” celebrated his third birthday Oct. 12 at his home on Coal Creek. He is the son of Mike and Kristy Roten of Galax.

    His grandparents are Breece and Carol Roten of Galax and Tom and Gloria Anderson of Myrtle Beach, S.C. His great-grandmothers are Opal Robinson of Galax and Patricia Lamantia of Apache Junction, Ariz.

    Bryce Edwards celebrated his sixth birthday Dec. 1 with family and friends. He had a dirt bike themed party. He is the son of Stacey and Rhonda Edwards.

    His brothers and sisters are Larissa, Cheyenne, Ricky, Seth and Lexus. Great-grandmother is Margie Quesenberry. Grandparents are Paul “Rick” and Barbra Riccio and Rubye and the late Steve Edwards Jr.
