  • APco agrees to smaller increase

    Appalachian Power Co. officials will embrace a tentative, negotiated settlement that could mean customers' electric bills would increase by about 17 percent instead of by about 24 percent.

    That figure would include a recent increase in the utility's fuel factor.

    John Shepelwich, a spokesman for APCo., emphasized that the 17 percent "is a ballpark estimate."

  • Alleged gambling operation busted

    A 47-year-old Galax man has been indicted for operating an "illegal gambling enterprise," stemming from a Sept. 16 search of Blue Ridge Lanes bowling alley in Galax.

    An indictment from the Carroll County grand jury, which met in a special session Oct. 16, identified the man charged as Michael Howard Bobbitt of the Hebron section of Carroll County.

    Initially sealed by the court, the indictment was released on Friday. An indictment is a formal charge, not a finding of guilt.

    BRISTOL –– Galax’s boys cross country team endured extremely windy conditions Wednesday and breezed into the state meet for the 16th time in the program’s 20-year history, earning a runner-up finish at the Region C championships at Sugar Hollow Park.

  • Cavaliers finish with a bang

    HILLSVILLE –– What a nice night for a drive.

    Carroll County turned a possible game-changing special teams play by Graham into a 99-yard scoring march early in the third quarter and rolled on to a 47-6 shelling of the G-Men in the Southwest District finale for both teams Friday at Tommy Thompson Field.

    The win was Carroll’s first since 2004 against the G-Men and only the second in the 15-game history of the series. Carroll County ends its season at 5-5, 3-3 in the district, while Graham awaits a possible playoff berth after finishing at 4-6, 3-3.

  • Harlan thumps Grayson 69-20

    INDEPENDENCE -- For the second time this season, Grayson County has played a Kentucky football team. And for the second time the outcome has been a disaster for the Blue Devils.

    Harlan County rolled into Bill Strong Field Friday night and when the smoke cleared, the Black Bears had beaten Grayson County 69-20. Harlan County (6-3) scored in every quarter and made the Blue Devils (0-9) pay for every mistake on the scoreboard.

  • Cavaliers run win streak to 21 in SWD semis

    HILLSVILLE –– Carroll County survived one of its worst games of the year and was still able to come away with a four-game win, knocking off Marion 25-20, 17-25, 25-13, 25-19 in the Southwest District tournament volleyball semifinals Thursday.

    The Cavaliers remained undefeated after 21 matches with the win and advanced to the tournament finals on Saturday, where they faced Abingdon, a four-game winner over Tazewell in the night’s first semifinal.

  • Quick start leads Wave past Galax

    NARROWS – Galax lost for the seventh time in its past eight games, falling to Narrows 27-8 Friday night in a Mountain Empire District game at Ragsdale Field.

    The Tide (2-7 overall, 1-3 district) lost the battle up front as Narrows’ offense line pushed around Galax’s defenders all night.

  • Landmark suspends sale of media properties

    Landmark Media Enterprises LLC announced Wednesday that it has suspended the search for buyers for most of its properties, including community newspapers The Gazette and The Declaration, citing the "credit crisis."

    But the company is continuing negotiations to sell The Virginian-Pilot.

    "We are having discussions regarding The Virginian Pilot with an interested buyer," said Landmark's vice chairman, Richard F. Barry III, on Wednesday. "The buyer is encouraged about obtaining financing."

  • Beamer sign disappears

    Fancy Gap residents are reporting the disappearance of the "Frank Beamer Country" sign from the intersection of U.S. 52 and Virginia 148.

    It was a 2-by-16-foot sign that welcomed people entering Carroll through Fancy Gap to the Virginia Tech football coach's hometown.

    "It could be a fan, you never know," said Chief Deputy Glenn Nester of the Carroll Sheriff's Office.

  • Three vying for Elk Creek seat

    INDEPENDENCE — In a year in which America will choose a new leader, citizens of the Elk Creek District in Grayson County will select a new supervisor through a special election.

    Three candidates are running for the seat, and that doesn’t include Chris Morton, who opted to not seek election Nov. 4 to the post he was appointed to fill.

    The Grayson County Board of Supervisors appointed Morton last December to serve part of the unexpired term of Ralph Tuggle until a special election could be held.
