  • Tide gets defensive in 55-19 win

    The best thing about good defense is that it never experiences a shooting slump.

    Though Galax struggled offensively, its pressure defense completely stymied Holston until a few Maroon Tide shots began to fall, allowing Galax to run away with a 55-19 win over the Cavaliers in a nondistrict game Monday.

    “We were doing what we wanted to do. We were playing good defense, we were creating turnovers and getting steals, we just weren’t laying it in the basket,” said Galax coach Jamie Dotson. “We weren’t in rhythm on offense at all.”

  • Carroll County wrestlers go 3-2 at Cave Spring duals

    ROANOKE –– Carroll County finished with three wins and two losses in the Cave Spring duals wrestling tournament, held last weekend at Cave Spring High School.

    The Cavaliers opened the event with a pair of wins, topping Covington 42-30 and William Fleming 48-28, before dropping decisions to Salem (36-33) and Cave Spring (55-12).

    The Cavaliers wrapped up the tournament with a 55-22 defeat of Franklin County.

  • Brown caps stellar season with NEFC’s top offensive award

    WORCESTER, Mass. – After putting together the best individual rushing performance in the history of Massachusetts Institute of Technology football, DeRon Brown was rewarded by the New England Football Conference with the Boyd Division offensive player of the year award at the NEFC’s annual postseason meeting recently.

  • Lanning named Southwest’s top defensive player

    HILLSVILLE –– James Lanning made a big impact on each game by making lots of big impacts in each game.

    With his ability to find his way to the football and make the play once he got there, Lanning left his mark on the Southwest District and earned the league’s defensive player of the year award in all-district voting, which was released last week.

    A 6-foot-2, 205-pound senior, Lanning was one of the leading tacklers in Southwest Virginia, finishing the season with 83 unassisted tackles and 32 assists. He also had nine tackles for loss during the season.

    One thing I heard little or nothing about in the groundbreaking 2008 elections, was the disastrous erosion of civil rights in this country.

    Nor have I heard any subsequent discussion of George W. Bush’s assault on the Constitution, which he called a “(deleted) piece of paper.”

  • Don't fall for 'free money' offers

    A Rooftop of Virginia client was conned out of $900 in credit card charges last month after a grant-writers research company in Raleigh, N.C., promised to find free money, only to provide a list of governmental agencies that already provide free services.

    Grant Writers Research Network offered to help an elderly woman find grants to help her repair her home, said a concerned Tammy Webb, community resource service coordinator of Rooftop of Virginia Community Action Program.

  • Court sets aside 4-6 weeks for Hammer trial

    INDEPENDENCE — Independence attorney Jonathon Venzie, one of the lawyers representing Frederick Hammer on five charges of capital murder and 11 other charges, told Grayson Circuit Judge Brett Geisler that Hammer's trial could last between four and six weeks.

    The charges against Hammer stem from the killings of Ronald Hudler, 73; his son, Frederick Hudler, 44; and farm worker John Miller Jr. , 25, on Jan. 24.

  • State to appeal dog custody case

    HILLSVILLE — Dogs being held in the state's care as the result of an investigation into a Carroll County man appear to be in legal limbo at the moment.

    In investigating reports of poor conditions in kennels owned by David Winesett of Coulson Church Road, Virginia State Police seized 63 dogs.
