HILLSVILLE –– In voting for the Region IV player of the year award, one of the coaches from the ultra-powerful River Ridge District said she would take Kim Caudill in a heartbeat.

No further endorsement necessary.

Caudill, who helped lead Carroll County to one of its most successful seasons ever, was named the top player in both the Southwest District and in Region IV, capping a career that made her the top offensive threat in CCHS history.

A man and woman charged with assault in the alleged macing of five Republican campaign workers last month have filed charges of their own.

According to court documents, Daniel Cason Meinecke, 29, and Cara Annis Hindman, 26, have filed misdemeanor assault charges against Galax Republican Party Chairman Mike Stevens and another man at the scene that day, David Matthews, respectively.

In court documents, Meinecke says that, “during a heated conversation about stolen political yard signs, Michael Stevens grabbed me by my sweatshirt and chest.”

HILLSVILLE — Three years after AmerLink announced the coming of a manufacturing plant and hundreds of jobs to Carroll, the log home company finds itself the target of a lawsuit filed by the county on Wednesday.

At the outset of Wednesday’s Carroll Board of Supervisors’ meeting, Chairman Sam Dickson read a statement announcing that the county was suing AmerLink for breach of contract.

INDEPENDENCE — Frederick Hammer returned to Grayson County General Circuit Court on Oct. 31 to answer to two additional charges of capital murder while committing a robbery.

A grand jury, meeting in session Oct. 24, returned the two charges in the deaths of Frederick Hudler, 44, and a farm worker, John Steven Miller Jr., 25, both who lived in West Jefferson, N.C.

Hammer now faces a total of 16 charges in connection with the shooting deaths of three men on a Christmas tree farm in Mouth of Wilson on Jan. 24.
