  • A Way Forward

Not to be premature, but it looks like a new day might be dawning in the Twin Counties — one that holds the promise of an amicable relationship between the Town of Hillsville and Carroll County.

Though the town and county have cooperated in the past when they expected mutual benefits, it seemed the officials for the two localities did not see eye to eye very often.

An atmosphere of hostility seemed to be the norm, as water and sewer disagreements stretched on for half a dozen years or more.

  • Kanawha Valley is latest stop on Crooked Road

DUGSPUR — Kanawha Valley Arena has just come out of the gate with its Crooked Road affiliated partner designation, but the place ropes in much more than mountain music.

  • Local churches helping out in Costa Rica

When the Rev. Ricardo Alvarado, pastor of the Hispanic congregation at First Baptist Church of Galax, visited a halfway house in Costa Rica in March, he saw something he didn't know existed in his own country — a poorly pieced-together structure made from whatever wood and metal could be found.

The veterans' memorial, slated to be constructed next to the Galax Public Library, will cover more than 3,600 square feet.

  • Shaky start dooms Devils in Region C baseball

BUCHANAN -- Grayson County’s early-game woes continued Tuesday as James River pounced on the Blue Devils for seven first-inning runs, rolling to a 14-5 win in the Region C baseball quarterfinals Tuesday at James River High School. Other than a scoreless start in its final regular season game, the Blue Devils have given up an average of 4.4 runs in the first inning of their last six games.

  • James River finishes strong, ousts Grayson

INDEPENDENCE -- After hanging tough with a powerful James River softball team for four innings Tuesday, Grayson County eventually let the game get out of hand and dropped an 8-0 decision to the Knights in a Region C tournament first round game at home.  But despite the disappointing end to an otherwise fine season for the Mountain Empire District champions, what weighed even more heavily in the hearts of the Blue Devil players was the loss of starting
