  • Warrant describes kennel conditions

    HILLSVILLE — An informant who apprised Virginia State Police investigators about the kennels on a Coulson Church Road property described as "deplorable" the living conditions under which dogs were being kept.

    Virginia State Police served a search warrant Thursday at 4207 Coulson Church Road at property owned by David Winesett, who once served as Carroll County's animal control officer.

    The warrant was part of an investigation into a report from a citizen about how the kennels had been kept. Investigators seized 63 dogs from the property.

  • Bank robbery suspect arrested in Arkansas

    GASSVILLE, Ark. — A search of more than seven months has ended after a man accused of robbing the Grayson National Bank branch in Whitetop, Va., was arrested in Arkansas last week.

    Grayson Sheriff Richard Vaughan said Richard Joseph Bauer, 70, of Junction City, Ore., was arrested last Tuesday while attempting to rob the First National Bank in Gassville.

    Vaughan said authorities told him Bauer was still in the bank when officers arrived, and he was arrested without incident by Gassville police.

  • Shakespeare in the Studio

    Instructor Linda Donnell teaches “Shakespeare for Children” at the Conservatory of Dance & Theatre in downtown Galax. For an hour each week for a month, children ages 8 to 12 learn the many aspects of Shakespearean theatre. In the interactive class, they learned dances of the Elizabethan Era, about sonnets, received voice training and played theatre games.

    A dancer and actor, Donnell has trained in Shakespeare, acting, voice, movement and mime under British Professor Emeritus James Dodding, along with her many other achievements and education.

  • Airport commission asked to step down

    INDEPENDENCE — After months of discussing what to do about the proposed change at the Twin County Regional Airport Commission, Independence Town Council has passed a resolution.

    Now, they wait and see if it has any teeth.

    Back in July, Interim Airport Manager Tim Brown approached council asking for support to change the commission’s membership from seven localities — Carroll and Grayson counties, the City of Galax and the towns of Hillsville, Fries and Independence — to what the commission determined to be the “big three.”

  • Horse, mule shot in Dugspur

    HILLSVILLE — A 41-year-old Laurel Fork man has been charged with shooting a horse and a mule Nov. 18, according to Carroll authorities.

    Steven Spangler was charged Monday with two counts of maliciously shooting animals belonging to Tommy Brown of Dugspur, according to Sheriff Warren Manning. The animals were a horse and a mule. The charges are Class 5 felonies.

    Carroll Sheriff's Office Investigators Fred Bobbitt and Venton Smith and Animal Control Officer Terry Woods handled the investigation, the sheriff said.

  • Local cloggers take Grand Ole Opry stage

    COOKEVILLE, Tenn. — Soon after clogging team Rhythm 'N' Motion stepped down off the Grand Ole Opry stage Oct. 10, they earned an encore appearance by winning the America's Clogging Hall of Fame nationals against about 400 other competitors.

    The repeat champion team features four dancers who first practiced on stages in the Twin Counties — Melissa Pack, Christina Nobili, Dereck Galyean and Kody Hash.

  • Long Time Coming

    Chestnut Creek School of the Arts may have had a slow start after a two-year delay, but now that the paperwork and ideas have come together, the art school will take off fast.

    The City of Galax has been pushing the process along as quickly as possible. This year, the city chose its director and associate director. CCSA finally came into the public eye, as various art classes have been hosted during festivals and throughout the year.  And most recently, the city has finally chosen South End Construction to begin the renovation by the end of this year.

  • Galax fills six first-team spots

    Here’s a telling fact about small-school football, which, by necessity, is about as iron-man as it comes: Of the 14 names listed on the all-Mountain Empire District first-team defense, no fewer than 11 were also first- or second-team on offense.

    That’s single-A ball, where few are expected to do much. Few did more than Galax’s Tyler Houk, the only player named first team at three different positions on the 2008 all-MED football team, voted on by the district’s coaches.

  • Tide girls still on the upswing

    Galax girls’ basketball coach Jamie Dotson isn’t into predictions. It’s probably a good thing, because nobody would have foreseen what the Lady Maroon Tide accomplished last season.

    One year removed from a 1-18 record, Galax bounced back by coming within one game of a Group A Division 1 state tournament berth, knocking off Holston and then Highland County in triple overtime before falling to Bland County in the Region C semifinals to finish the season at 10-16.

    Here Galax goes to the state final four for the first time in decades, and darned if the state board of education doesn’t go and tell seven Maroon Tide players that they are no longer needed as students at GHS.

    Well, if Tide coach Verl Brown must start over, he has a pretty good nucleus with which to do so.
