  • Concert to honor musician's memory

    The Rex Theater's “Blue Ridge Backroads Live” radio show will host a concert Friday in memory of young musician Houston Caldwell, who passed away on April 30.

    The concert, featuring The Snyder Family Band with Zeb & Samantha, is the first in a series to be held at the Rex, leading up to the first-ever HoustonFest in Felts Park in Galax on May 6-7, 2011.

  • Textbook voting in Carroll

     HILLSVILLE ― Voting with classes in session at Carroll schools proceeded in textbook fashion, county election board officials and educators agree.

    Hosting both students and voters in the building during the mid-term elections Tuesday reversed a long-standing tradition that schools take a holiday when the polls opened.

    "We wanted the voters not to be hampered in getting to the polls," said electoral board member Keith Meredith after the election.

  • Griffith wins 9th District in upset

    BRISTOL — Republican Morgan Griffith won a stunning victory in the 9th Congressional District on Tuesday, unseating 28-year incumbent Rick Boucher (D-Abingdon) and accomplishing a task thought impossible just a few months ago.

    Griffith rode a wave of momentum, distaste for President Obama and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, and a flood of outside money that helped level the playing field against Boucher's heftier campaign fundraising.

  • She's three

    Kennedié Cheyan Holder celebrated her third birthday Oct. 2 with a Pretty Princess Party at her Nana and Papa’s house with family and friends. She is the daughter of Brad and Sparkle Holder.

    Her grandparents are Mark and Paulette Chappell and Myrna and the late Barney Holder. She also celebrated with friends from Fairview Daycare.

  • He's three

    Casey Michael Jones turned three Oct. 5. He celebrated Sept. 25 with a cars theme party at his home with family and friends. He is the son of Jody and Debbie Jones of Hillsville.

    His grandparents are Katie and C.C. Dalton Jr. of Hillsville and Brenda and Harry Jones of Fries. His great-grandmother is Helen Jones of Fries. He has two special cousins, Carlie Dalton and Dalton Young.

  • Bowers, Diamond unite in marriage

    Travis Shea Bowers and Heather Nicole Diamond were married Sept. 18, 2010, at River Hill Christian Church.
    Pastor Leo Phillips performed the double-ring ceremony.

    The groom is the son of Clarence and Janice Bowers. His grandmother is Ruby Bowers.
    The bride is the daughter of Paula Diamond and Dallas Diamond. Her grandparents are Elmer and Ada Lee Williams.
    The bride was escorted down the aisle by her father and was given in marriage by her parents.
    The groom’s father was best man.

  • O'Dell, Norman marry

    Jessica Suzanne O’Dell and Jacob David Norman were married Oct. 2, 2010, at a 6 p.m. ceremony at Gate City Baptist Church in Jamestown, N.C.
    The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Chan Shaver.  A reception was held at the Clarion Hotel in Greensboro, N.C.

    The bride is the daughter of Chuck and Vicki Gregory of High Point, N.C., and the granddaughter of Mike and Susie Floyd of Galax.
    The groom is the son of James and Rita Norman of Marietta, Ga.
    The couple live in High Point, N.C.

  • Turns 96

    Agnes Marie Lundy Cox turned 96 years old on Aug. 19. Family and friends surprised her with a party on Aug. 14 at Flat Rock Community Building. She is widow of the late James Earl Cox of the Flat Rock community in Independence.

    Agnes has two children — Anne C. Collins of San Francisco, and Harry Cox of Independence. She has three grandchildren, Chris Cox and Brad Cox of Independence and Mary Lynne Ward of Galax; and great-grandsons Austin Cox and Braeden Ward.
