  • Nautilus expansion to create 60 jobs in Grayson

    Sixty new jobs will be created for Grayson County through a planned $1.7 million expansion by Nautilus, Inc., when it adds production for a cardio exercise equipment line.

    Gov. Tim Kaine announced on Thursday the plans by Nautilus to expand. Virginia successfully competed with Oregon and China for the project, the governor said.

    Real tree looks better

    I think the county made the right decision to remove the artificial Christmas tree from the middle of the sidewalk on the Old Carroll County Courthouse lawn.

    I can understand their concern about the safety hazard.

    In this day and time of lawsuits, if someone tripped over one of the stakes or cables holding up the artificial Christmas tree, the county would have been held responsible.

  • Carroll County wins anyway

    HILLSVILLE –– When Carroll County found itself trailing by three points with less than 90 seconds remaining in its game Monday against Patrick County, it’s a good bet the Cavaliers’ strategy wasn’t to clank a bunch of free throws.

    But hey, if it works…

    The Cavaliers hit just 5-of-14 from the foul line in the final minute and 23 seconds but were still able to rally for their first victory of the year, knocking off the Cougars 46-44 for a nondistrict win.

  • Warriors run past Maroon Tide

    CHILHOWIE –– Though the varying level of competition has been a big factor in the up-and-down start to Galax’s girls’ basketball season, and though Chilhowie can most certainly provide a stiffer test than a couple of earlier opponents, the Maroon Tide is still waiting to string two strong outings together.

    Tuesday, Galax led going into the second quarter before a pair of lengthy scoreless streaks led to a 59-31 nondistrict loss to the host Warriors in the first round of the Greever Crouse Tournament at Chilhowie High School.

  • Grayson County boys hold off Alleghany 53-50

    SPARTA, N.C. –– Bubba Bowen scored with a minute left to give Grayson County a one-point lead and sank two foul shots with four seconds remaining to ice the win as the Blue Devils edged Alleghany in a nondistrict game Wednesday night.

    Alleghany (1-6) controlled the tempo and took a 25-22 halftime lead. Grayson County was able to pick up the pace with 19 third-quarter points, leading 41-40 entering the final period.

  • Hash leads Tide past Warriors

    SALTVILLE –– Justin Hash scored 18 points, including four 3-pointers, as Galax whipped Chilhowie 56-48 Monday in the first round of the Greever Crouse Tournament at Northwood High School.

    Galax (4-1) trailed 25-23 at halftime before taking charge with a 13-4 run in the third period.

    Scott Alouf added 11 points for the Maroon Tide. Andrew Russell scored 16 points for the Warriors (0-3).

  • MONEY TRAIL

    The Crooked Road initiative, launched along U.S. 58 in Southwest Virginia in 2002, has brought in nearly 264,000 visitors to the region so far this year and the economic impact totals $23 million each year, according to a 2008 assessment of Virginia's heritage music trail that was presented at a press conference Dec. 9 at the Rex Theater in Galax.

    The historic theater's stage is one of the music venues on the trail.

  • Judge upholds ruling to return dogs

    Dismissal of a civil case was upheld Wednesday against a Carroll County dog kennel owner whose 63 dogs were seized by the state last month.

    Carroll Circuit Judge Brett Geisler ruled that a lower court had acted properly when it dismissed the case against David Winesett of Coulson Church Road, who once served as Carroll’s chief dog warden.

    The dogs had been in the care of the Angels of Assisi animal rescue group in Roanoke after their confiscation by Virginia State Police due to what authorities called “deplorable” conditions.
