  • Sex solicitation ad leads to arrest

    An ad posted by a man offering to pay for sex got a Galax man arrested when the person who answered his call turned out to be working undercover.
    Galax police were contacted May 16 by a concerned citizen who saw an ad posted by someone offering to pay for sex.
    Galax Police Chief Rick Clark said a female Galax police employee made contact with the suspect, who agreed to meet her.
    Officers arrested Steven Shane Patrick, 40, of Galax and charged him with soliciting prostitution and misdemeanor possession of marijuana.

  • Carroll High damaged by water leak


    HILLSVILLE — Water spilled out of the Carroll High School doors into the parking lot and collected up to four inches in the first floor overnight Wednesday when the facility's main line sprang a leak.

    Custodians discovered the problem when they returned to work Thursday morning, according to schools Superintendent Greg Smith and Clerk of the Works Dennis Cole.

    Makayla Grace Hancock celebrated her second birthday March 28 with a fire truck party at the Hillsville Volunteer Fire Department picnic area with family and friends.

  • Turns eight

    Jaelyn McKenski Bell turned eight on Feb. 24. She celebrated with a cow themed party.

    She is the daughter of Brent Bell and Amanda Helton. She is the granddaughter of Randy and Kim Bell, Gary Elliott and Judy Elliott. Her great-grandparents are M.C. and Irene Bell and Billie Johnson.

  • She's one

    Havengrace Sumner turned one on May 15. Her parents are Chris and Lisa Sumner of Galax.

    Grandparents are Tommy and Carol Sumner, Johnny and Linda Dixon, and Terri Rittwage.

  • Sisters celebrate birthdays

    Kamdyn Castle Hill turned 3 on April 19 and celebrated with a cookout at the home of her Uncle Shannon and Aunt Lisa Lowe in Pine Mountain. Her sister, Brailyn Corrine Hill, had her first birthday on May. She celebrated with a Mickey Mouse party at her home.

    They are the daughters of Derek and Brandi Hill, Galax. Their grandparents are Nick and Doris Moody and Dean and Jeanie Webb.

  • UPDATED: N.C. murder suspect captured in Galax

    UPDATED: MAY 24, 10:20 A.M.

    A murder suspect arrested Wednesday in Galax is now charged with homicide in Wake County, N.C., in connection with the death of his wife.

    The Galax Police Department arrested Sonny Lee Howard, 42, of Raleigh, N.C., and charged him with being a fugitive from North Carolina.

  • Grayson budget balances without tax increase

    INDEPENDENCE – Grayson County has a nearly balanced budget and residents will see no tax increase again this year.
    Supervisors held a budget work session May 16. They started the budget process with a nearly $475,000 deficit between projected revenues and expenditures.
    Prior to the meeting, County Administrator Jonathan Sweet said he and his staff had managed to close that gap to approximately $130,000 through adjustments to the revenue side of about $90,000 and decreases on the expenditure side of nearly $250,000.
