  • She's four

    Hayleigh Noelle Dolinger turned four on April 3. She celebrated with her family on April 1 at Mount Hope United Methodist Church in Fries.

    She is the daughter of Robbie and Monica Dolinger of Galax. Her big brother is Robbie Jr. Maternal grandparents are Mike and Sue Huffman of Fries. Paternal grandparents are Juanita and the late Ed Dolinger of Independence. Her special great-grandmother is Mildred Ring of Fries.

  • Harvey, Hanson marry

    Dr. David Harvey and Stephanie Harvey of Hillsville announce the marriage of their daughter, Sarah Booth Harvey, to Eric Mathew Hanson, son of Paul and Jean Hanson of Midlothian, Texas.

    Harvey is the granddaughter of Dr. Sidney and Shirley Harvey of Elk Creek, and Lathan and Carolyn Umphlett of Virginia Beach.
    The marriage was in Richmond on May 7, 2011, at the Valentine History Museum.
    Harvey, a graduate of Radford University, is pursuing a career as a State Farm Insurance agent.

  • Fire destroys apartment, outbuilding

    Brett Anauo of Galax was taken to Twin County Regional Hospital for smoke inhalation after his apartment, located above a garage, caught fire on Monday morning.
    The Galax Volunteer Fire Department responded at 5 a.m. to the fire at 601 Givens St. in Galax.
    Anauo said he woke up and the room was on fire.
    Galax Fire Chief David Hankley believes the fire, which caused significant damage, was electrical and may have started from an extension chord.

  • April is Child Abuse Prevention Month

    Child abuse and neglect is the cause of more than 1,000 deaths each year in the U.S. and, in Virginia, every 84 minutes a child is abused or neglected.
    During 2011, there were 29,619 children reported as possible victims of abuse or neglect in the state.
    These reports were recorded by local Departments of Social Services for investigation or family assessments.
