  • Warriors no easy opener

     RIDGEWAY –– It could have been better, it could have been worse. All in all, it was about what Galax coach Mark Dixon expected.

    Although the final tally sheet showed a somewhat misleading five Magna Vista touchdowns to none for Galax, the Maroon Tide (3-7 last season) held its own for the better part of the two-team friendly against last year’s Region IV Division 4 runner-up.

  • Grayson wins state

     YORKTOWN –– Grayson County  captured its first ever state title in Little League fastpitch softball recently with a 7-1 win over McLean in the 10-11 division at the York County Sports Complex.  

    Grayson County entered the week-long event as the District 1 champion and began pool play against Northhampton on July 16.

    Kassie Hawks and Jenna Holdaway combined to pitch a perfect game, while Grayson hitters rolled up 13 runs with Emily Hart leading the way with a 3-for-3 game at the plate in a 13-0 victory.

  • Elk Creek hosts Junior Dragster Summer Nationals

     ELK CREEK –– The Junior Dragster Summer Nationals, presented by Bales Tool Co., headlined what turned out to be a fantastic weekend of racing at Elk Creek Dragway.

    Jason Halsey of Independence drove his dragster to a final round 7.96 e.t. at 68 mph to win the title over fellow Independence drive Corey Pack, who posted a 9.26 e.t. at 63 mph.

  • Galax Police report busy week

    At least four people were arrested through Thursday during the week of the Galax Old Fiddlers' Convention.
    Aug. 7, Miranda Mario Cruz, 32, of Woodlawn was arrested by Galax Police Officer Jason Hawks and charged with DUI, reckless driving and possession of a firearm by an undocumented alien.

  • McDonnell: give State Police immigration authority

    Some members of the Virginia State Police could enforce immigration laws and play a role in the deportation of illegal aliens if federal officials grant a request for that authority from Gov. Bob McDonnell.
    McDonnell announced last Thursday that he has formally asked the Department of Homeland Security for a 287(g) agreement, named for a section of federal law that permits some immigration powers to be given to state and local police departments.

  • Grayson relay raises nearly $39,000

    FRIES — Seventeen teams raised $38,659.40 during Grayson County's Relay for Life held July 30-31 at the Fries Ballpark.
    “We were really pleased with that,” said event co-chairman Lori Warren.
    Teams from across Grayson County gather annually to raise money and awareness for the American Cancer Society event. During a Relay, volunteers celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost and fight back against the disease.

  • 10 injured in wreck

    HILLSVILLE — Ten people, six of them children, had injuries as the result of an Aug. 5 multiple-vehicle accident at U.S. 58 west of Airport Road.
    Seven of the injured were transported to Twin County Regional Hospital after the incident involving four vehicles, according to First Sgt. Mike Musser of the Virginia State Police.
    None of the injuries were thought to be life-threatening.
    It happened when Debra Smith of Galax, driving a 1993 Chevy van rear-ended a 1991 Ford Explorer driven by Mitzee Mangan of Hillsville.
