  • Tide battles, Cavs prevail

    HILLSVILLE –– Some came hoping to see an upset. Others may have come looking for a blowout. Everyone went home having witnessed a very good, entertaining basketball game.

    Galax overcame a sluggish start, rallied into the lead before halftime and trailed by just five points with less than four minutes to go before Carroll County pulled away for a 54-44 nondistrict win in a girls’ game Wednesday night.

  • Second-half surge leads Grayson past Carroll

    INDEPENDENCE –– Tied at halftime, Grayson County outscored Carroll County 44-25 in the second half to take a 69-50 nondistrict boys’ win Tuesday.

    The Blue Devils (8-4) were led by Eric Harvey’s 16 points. Steven Eller scored 15, Bubba Bowen added 10 and Preston Bowen chipped in with eight points, 10 rebounds and six steals.

    Tyler Reavis hit four 3-pointers and led all scorers with 18 points for the Cavaliers (2-10).

  • Maroon Tide pulls away for win

    INDEPENDENCE –– Galax and Grayson County entered Mountain Empire District play Friday as the two winningest teams in the league through the nondistrict portion of their schedules. The gap between No. 1 and No. 2 may not be as great as many might have believed.

    Before a standing-room-only horde at Grayson County Middle School, the Maroon Tide and the Blue Devils entered the fourth quarter on even terms before Galax pulled away for a 66-59 win, taking a big first step in MED play.

  • Galax opens MED slate with big win

    INDEPENDENCE –– It’s only one game deep into what is a very balanced, very competitive Mountain Empire District race, but for now, Galax is sitting on the top looking down.

    The Maroon Tide took a good first step in district play, opening up with a 55-27 win Friday night over Grayson County to take an early lead in the MED standings. Galax improved to 5-6 overall, 1-0 in the league, while Grayson County dropped to 1-12, 0-1.

  • Bulldogs bite Cavaliers 79-61

    HILLSVILLE – A game that started out with so much promise turned out to be another tough loss for the Carroll County varsity boys Friday night.

    The Cavaliers (2-11 overall, 1-3 district) entered the game having lost eight of their last nine games, and Friday ended no different as Tazewell (4-6, 2-1) came in and dominated them on their home court, taking a 79-61 Southwest District win.

    The Cavs began the game strong, scoring 11 of the game’s first 14 points.

  • Lady Cavs hold on for 49-46 win

    HILLSVILLE – Carroll County remained undefeated and number one in the district following a 49-46 girls’ win over Tazewell Friday night.

    It wasn’t easy for the Cavaliers (6-5 overall, 4-0 district), though, having to hold off a stubborn Bulldog (2-7, 1-3) team looking for only its third win in the last seven games.

    The Cavs opened the game up on a mission to put the Lady Dogs away early, outscoring them 16-7 in the first eight minutes.

  • Regional water plant site chosen

    INDEPENDENCE — A site has been landed for a new regional water plant on the New River, but Virginia/Carolina Water Authority members haven't let many details flow.

    Independence Town Manager Kenneth Vaught told The Gazette in an e-mail last week that “the authority passed a resolution to acquire property and a conservation easement.”

  • Two charged in Galax purse snatching

    Two local women have been arrested and charged in connection with a purse snatching that occurred on Jan. 3 in Galax, according to the Galax Police Department.

    Galax Police were notified at 9:30 p.m. that 61-year-old Joyce Bunn had been knocked two the ground by two females and her purse stolen while Bunn was walking to her home on Grayson Street.

  • Goody's going out of business

    After emerging from Chapter 11 bankruptcy, Goody's Family Clothing will lay off its employees and close its doors — including its Galax store — the company announced this week.

    Management at Goody's Family Clothing in Galax was given orders not to provide any further information, but the assistant manager did say that the last day the store will be open is not certain at this time.

    Goody's will begin a going-out-of-business sale today, Friday.
