  • Felts Park stage dedicated (with VIDEO)

    State and local officials gathered in front of thousands at the Galax Old Fiddlers' Convention on Saturday night to celebrate the new addition of a permanent stage constructed in Felts Park in honor of the event's 75th anniversary.

  • Grayson to resume original tax schedule

    INDEPENDENCE — Grayson residents will once again have their entire real estate taxes due in December.
    Supervisors unanimously approved a change to the county’s tax collection ordinance after much discussion during the budget season.
    Prior to the 2009-10 budget year, supervisors approved a change to twice-a-year taxation to help offset cash flow problems.

  • Williams, Lewis exchange vows

    Rachel Leigh Williams and Johnathan Lee Lewis of Calabash, N.C., were united in marriage at 3 p.m. Dec. 29, 2009 in Amelia Island, Fla.

    Attending were Rachel’s parents, Doyle and Katherine Williams, and her grandmother, Laura Brannock, all of Calabash; and Johnathan’s mother, Sharon Lewis Hall of Ararat, N.C., and his brother and sister-in-law.
    The reception was held at The Verandas in Amelia Island. Another reception was held Jan. 16 in Galax for other family members and friends at Hillcrest Baptist Church social hall.

  • Burress, Hillenbrand united in marriage

    Erin Marie Burress and Karl David Hillenbrand were married June 26, 2010, at a 6 p.m. outdoor wedding in the Italian Garden of Maymont Park estate in Richmond.
    The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Dr. Thomas Whartenby, pastor of Galax Presbyterian Church.

    The bride is the daughter of Chuck and Karen Burress of Galax. The groom is the son of U.S. Navy Commander (Retired) Rick and Libby Hillenbrand of Springfield.

  • Brother, sister have birthdays

    Samantha Autumn Rose celebrated her second birthday on June 24 and Ryder Cole Rose celebrated his fifth birthday July 3.

  • Grubb, Harner to marry

    David and Menica Grubb of Wytheville announce the engagement of their daughter, Megan Grubb, to Brandon Harner, son of Pat and Brenda Harner of Hillsville.

    Megan is a 2005 graduate of George Wythe High School and received a bachelor’s degree in communications in 2009 from Virginia Tech.
    She is working toward her a master’s degree in elementary education at Radford University.

  • Celebrating 50th wedding anniversary

    Ralph and Modena Dalton recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

    They were married July 30, 1960, at the Presbyterian Church in Sparta, N.C. They reside in Galax. Their children are Ricky, Renee, Robin and Jamey.
     

  • Davis to serve 16.5 years for drug conspiracy

    ROANOKE — A Galax woman caught in a conspiracy to sell illegal drugs was sentenced Monday to 198 months in a federal prison.
    Stephie Nicole Bean Davis had pleaded guilty to a federal charge of conspiring to distribute a mixture of or substance containing methamphetamine after being indicted in January.

  • Fries Fiddlers' Convention begins Friday

     

    The 44th annual Fries Fiddlers' Convention begins Friday at 6 p.m.
    and continues Saturday at 3 p.m., beginning with the youth event.
    The convention will be held on the Fries Ball Park. Camping is available.
