  • Galax making charter changes

    Galax City Council, which recently hesitated to approve changes to the city's 55-year-old charter, held a hearing on the proposed amendments at its Monday's meeting.

    Most of the changes included fine-tuning and updating the charter's language to make it easier to adopt ordinances, said City Manager Keith Holland.

    “The hesitation was about the time, whether or not we'd get it in on time,” said Holland. The deadline to submit the changes to the General Assembly for approval was Jan. 14.

    Yes, Jesus judged — and so can I

    There are two subjects I’d like to address.

    Responding to Patrick Butler’s Jan. 12 letter, is my Bible the only one that contains Matthew 21: 12-13 and Mark 11: 15-17, where Jesus went on a rampage and drove all the money changers out of the Temple?

    Is my Bible the only one that contains Matthew 12:34 and 23:33 where Jesus vehemently calls the Pharisees snakes?

  • Pick the best — not cheapest — option

    Grayson County will decide this week between three water options for the new school being built in the western end of the county.

    Option 1 included a straight line to the school along Virginia 16 with 40 potential hookups. Option 2 adds to that a loop around Grange Hollow Road with 18 more potential hookups. Option 3 would service only the school.

    In order to get the most use out of taxpayers' money, the county should go with the $1.1 million Option 2.

  • How to avoid heater accidents

    Winter is here and with it comes the need to prepare for falling temperatures.

    “Preparation is the best way to protect your family from the dangers that come with extreme cold and wintry conditions,” says Dr. Craig Smith, health director for Mount Rogers Health District, which includes Galax and Carroll and Grayson counties.

    “We are urging residents to plan ahead and practice safety at home and while traveling.”

  • Robber strikes again

    Police say the suspect who robbed Galax's First Citizens Bank on Jan. 2 struck the First Citizens Bank at Valley View Mall in Roanoke last Wednesday around 4:30 p.m.

    The robber — who matches the description of the Galax suspect — walked into the Roanoke branch and demanded money, leaving with an undisclosed amount of cash.

    According to the Galax Police Department, the robber was also seen that day at the First Citizens Bank in Christiansburg, an hour prior to the Roanoke robbery.

    The Christiansburg bank was not robbed.

  • ON THE AGENDA

    RICHMOND — While no progress has been made on a proposed music venue outside Hillsville, two state delegates who represent the county have proposed bills to allow Carroll County to levy an admissions tax.

    Both Del. Ward Armstrong (D-Henry County) and Del. Bill Carrico (R-Fries) have proposed their own bills on the admission tax issue.

    Armstrong's is House Bill 1902, and Carrico's is House Bill 1751.

    Both bills approach adding an admissions tax in the exact same way.

  • Abduction suspect located

    Galax police officers arrested Pablo Aguilar-Ramirez, 21, of Bryn Mawr Drive in Galax on Jan. 12 for the Sept. 29, 2008, abduction of his estranged girlfriend at a home on Hanes Road in the city.

    Aguilar-Ramirez was arrested at a residence near the original incident site on Hanes Road.

  • Grayson approves zoning request

    INDEPENDENCE — Local fire departments, rescue squads and even individuals can now hold various recreational activities in Grayson County, with a special use permit.

    The Grayson Board of Supervisors held a public hearing during its December meeting to take comments on a proposed change to the zoning ordinance to allow various recreation activities, including lawn mower races.

    During its meeting Jan. 8, the board unanimously approved changing the ordinance to include the “rural commercial recreational uses.”

  • Shelter to keep dogs seized in Carroll County

    ROANOKE — Every dog has its day, and for 63 dogs seized from what state investigators called deplorable conditions in a Carroll County kennel, their day may have been Jan. 13, when they were officially turned over to a Roanoke shelter.

    Many of the dogs should be ready for adoption in about two weeks, according to Lisa O’Neill, the volunteer coordinator at Angels of Assisi, a nonprofit dedicated to helping animals. Some dogs still are receiving medical and dental care, and all will be spayed or neutered prior to adoption.

  • Cavs topple Falcons by 15

    HILLSVILLE –– With two key games this week against Southwest District co-leader Abingdon, Carroll County missed out on practice Monday due to inclement weather.

    Judging by Tuesday’s result, coach Marc Motley may want to give his girls free afternoons the day before every game.

    Carroll County held Abingdon to 12 first-half points, fought off a second-half rally and pulled away down the stretch, taking sole possession of the SWD’s top spot with a 50-36 win.
