  • Cavalier wrestlers go 3-0 in quad

    HILLSVILLE –– Ideally, late January is the perfect time for wrestling teams to peak. Going 7-1 in dual matches last week, Carroll County appears to be heading in that direction.

    The Cavaliers swept its first quad match in several years Wednesday when it took close nondistrict wins over Patrick County, Grayson County and Martinsville.

  • Police search for robbery suspect

    The Galax Police Department has not yet named a suspect in the robbery of Galax's First Citizens Bank that happened last Friday afternoon, according to Galax Police Chief Rick Clark.

    At about 3 p.m. on Jan. 2, security cameras showed a man entering the First Citizens branch on East Stuart Drive in Galax. The man passed a note to a teller indicating that he was armed and demanded cash.

    The suspect then fled the bank in an unknown direction with an undisclosed amount of cash.

  • Third quarter run lifts G-Men

    HILLSVILLE –– In many of Carroll County’s defeats this season, the Cavaliers have played evenly for two quarters and been overrun in the other two. Tuesday, Carroll County cut it down to one bad quarter. But it was still plenty enough for Graham.

    After trailing for only 53 seconds in the first half, the Cavaliers fell behind for good 19 seconds into the third quarter as Graham used a big third-period run to take a 67-55 Southwest District win.

  • Lady Cavs take 2OT win; Tide boys hold on to edge Fort

    BLUEFIELD –– Carroll County made just one field goal after regulation, instead getting it done from the foul line in knocking off Graham 51-50 in two overtimes in a key Southwest District girls’ game Tuesday at Graham Middle School.

    The Cavaliers (7-5 overall, 5-0 district) didn’t trail until early in the second overtime. Opening the game on a 9-0 run, Carroll County led 26-15 at halftime before the G-Girls (6-4, 2-1) roared back in the second half.

  • AND THE WINNERS ARE...

    Not to get all sentimental about 2008 or anything, but we're bound to look back nostalgically one day and say, "Boy, that year really sucked."

    Think of the year that just wrapped up as a motion picture. It was kind of a sequel to a bad movie (2007!) with a similar plot — layoffs and politics and high gas prices, oh my! — and the same characters. And, it managed to be almost as stinky.

  • Fire victims' names released

    A 4-year-old child, her mother and father were found dead inside their mobile home the morning of Jan. 12 after it caught fire.

    Larry Stephen Lafferty, 39; Amy Stoneman, 28; and their 4-year-old daughter Deanna Lafferty were all found deceased at the scene.

    A state police arson investigator was called in to examine the scene and determine the cause, but Grayson County Sheriff Richard Vaughan said he does not suspect foul play.

    Lafferty's aunt, Linda Maddox, and brother Scott spoke briefly with The Gazette on Monday afternoon.

  • Grayson considers 3 school water options

    INDEPENDENCE — Grayson has three options for getting water to the new school being built in the Western end of the county.

    Kevin Heath of Adams-Heath Engineering Inc. in Galax provided the board of supervisors with their options during a meeting Jan. 8.

    The first option is to simply run the line from the Town of Troutdale along Virginia 16 to the school.

    Heath said this option would provide a domestic and fire water line to the school, as well as 40 potential customers along the way.

  • Scholarship honors departing superintendent

    Galax City Council has set up a scholarship through the Galax Foundation for Excellence in Education to honor former Schools Superintendent Sam Cook, who retired in December.

    The city has pledged up to $2,500 to match private donations raised throughout the community to fund a scholarship for a deserving Galax High School senior in Cook's name.

  • Judge resigns after arrests

    RICHMOND — A judge who found himself on the wrong side of the law twice in 2008 resigned at the end of the year.

    Michael Keith Blankenship had been serving as a juvenile and domestic relations court judge in the 27th Judicial District — which includes Carroll, Grayson and Galax — when he was charged with misdemeanor crimes after two separate motor vehicle incidents last year.
