  • Man charged with attempted robbery of Shoney's

    HILLSVILLE — A Rochester, Minn., man was arrested Wednesday evening after an attempted robbery at the Shoney's restaurant near Interstate 77's Exit 14 in Hillsville.

    According to a Hillsville Police Department report, a 911 call was received at approximately 5:44 p.m. reporting a robbery in progress at Shoney's. Town police and Carroll County Sheriff's Department officers were dispatched to the scene.

    Lillian Hash of Independence will celebrate her 100th birthday with an open house hosted by her family on Feb. 18 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Independence First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.

    Hayden Thomas Blevins celebrated his third birthday Dec. 10 with a Toy Story party at Pizza Hut with his family.

    He is the son of Jason and Alison Blevins of Galax. His grandparents are Jim and Brenda Blevins of Ennice and Ray and Nonnie Plummer of Troutdale.

  • Brannock, Davis to marry

    Mr. and Mrs. Walter Davis of Galax, Vanada Sue Brannock of Hillsville and Timmy Brannock of Cana announce the engagement of their children, Douglas Wayne Davis and Angel Lynn Brannock.

    Davis works at American Mirror and Brannock is a full-time student at Wytheville Community College.
    A June 2012 wedding is planned.

  • Galax lands more grants

    The City of Galax has received more than $3 million in grants since grants administrator Brenda Marrah came on board a few months ago.
    Recently, the city was awarded an $11,000 grant for a Community Emergency Response Team. Marrah announced this grant allocation — the second for the program — at Galax City Council’s Feb. 13 meeting.
    A few months ago, the city was awarded $6,000 to start the CERT program.
