  • Healthy food comes with price in Carroll

    HILLSVILLE — Student meal prices will rise this school year, but so will the nutritional content, Carroll County school officials stress.
    The Carroll School Board approved breakfast prices of 90 cents for elementary students and 95 cents for older students and lunch prices of $1.65 for elementary and $1.75 for older students, after moving to meet new U.S. Department of Agriculture regulations under the most recent updates to the “dietary guidelines for Americans.”

    A young Galax police officer learned a hard lesson when his mom showed him some tough love in middle school, completely changing the direction he was headed.
    Silverio Gonzales, whose family came to Virginia from Mexico, hated middle school and did just enough to get by.
    When he told his mom he didn’t want to go to school anymore, she sent him to Florida to pick oranges.
    “She taught us that education is the most important thing we can do for ourselves,” said Gonzales, who just joined the Galax Police Department as its first bilingual officer.

    Says it’s a diary
    I’m calling about the reader that said they don’t think we should shoot fireworks in the sky to try to get God’s attention. I agree. I, too, am a good Christian. I have been to church and I am against people reading the Bible because it is a diary. We should not be shooting off fireworks to distract Him from reading the diary. When I first started, I did not know it was His diary. I thought it was a very sad, handwritten book. But you, sir or ma’am, have showed me the way and the light.

    Braeden Hunter Ward turned three years old on June 26. He celebrated with an outer space cake and a party at his home. He is the son of Kris and Mary Lynne Ward of Independence. He also has a little brother, Levi.
    His grandparents are Harry Cox, Bo and Susan Moxley and Harvey and Jill Ward. His great-grandparents are Agnes Cox, Mary Jane Hollingsworth, Odell Moxley, Danna Ward and Lacy and Dreama Bowman.

    Cecil and Judy Horton celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary July 2.

    They have two children, Gary Grantand Michelle Ann Shaffner. Also, they have seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

    Billy R. Whitaker of Galax, guilty of littering; pay $300 fine and $81 costs.

  • Relay for Life raises $62,324

    A total of 526 people on 37 teams participated in the 2012 Galax-Carroll Relay for Life, held July 27 at the Carroll County High School track.

    The teams raised a total of $62,324 for cancer research. The event began at 6 p.m. with a survivors’ lap and continued throughout the night, ending with a closing ceremony at 2 a.m. Saturday.
