  • Riders bring trail concerns to forest service

    WYTHEVILLE — U.S. Forest Service officials and a Grayson County-based horseback riders group still aren’t seeing eye-to-eye following a forum last week about proposed trail closings.

    But Grayson County resident Elizabeth Thomas, the president and founder of the group, MRNRA Trail Advocates Coalition, sees at least one promising sign – the plan to close most of the horse trails in Mount Rogers National Recreation Area is moving at less of a gallop than before.

    I see the city is working on different sidewalks and it is looking nice. I sure wish the city would see something about Circle Drive’s sidewalks and yards, which were messed up two or three years ago from the work from the schools. It is still coming in the basements and ruining everything for us. We pay high taxes and I think we should be treated better.

  • Naturalists to explore Grayson's highlands

    The 2015 Mount Rogers Naturalist Rally begins May 8 in Grayson County, beginning with the annual dinner in Konnarock.

    The event begins at 5 p.m. on Friday with registration and sign-ups for field trips to be held Saturday. For those only interested in the field trips, registration resumes at 7 a.m. on Saturday, at the Konnarock Community Center.

    There are morning and afternoon outings, with a hotdog lunch break in between. There will be cultural hikes to historic Troutdale and Fairwood Valley.

  • Hillsville could require utility rate hike to balance budget

    HILLSVILLE — Water and wastewater expenses will be a major factor in planning for the Town of Hillsville’s 2015-16 budget.

    Town officials held a budget workshop April 28, where a rough draft of the proposal was presented to council by Town Manager Retta Jackson and town Treasurer LeAnna Hines.

  • Williams seeks court clerk post in Grayson

    INDEPENDENCE — Democratic candidate Robert “Bobby” Williams presented his campaign platform during an April 21 kick-off event in the Historic 1908 Courthouse in Independence.

    Williams, currently an independent legal research consultant, hopes to unseat the one-term incumbent candidate, Republican Susan Herrington, in the Nov. 3 election.

  • HoustonFest 2015 best yet, organizer say

    Despite a decidedly chilly Friday, the fifth annual HoustonFest, held last weekend in Galax’s Felts Park, saw more people than ever, according to at least two organizers.

    The festival, run as a collaboration between Houston Caldwell’s family and the Galax Volunteer Fire Department, celebrates the life of the late volunteer firefighter and musician and honors his legacy through funding scholarships for young musicians.

  • CCMS students evacuated for bomb threat

    HILLSVILLE ― Students were evacuated from Carroll County Middle School Tuesday morning, after reports of a bomb threat put the school on lockdown for more than an hour.

    According to an official report from Principal Marc Quesenberry, the administrative office received a report from a teacher Tuesday morning, saying that a student informed them of a threatening message on a bathroom wall. Upon investigation, the teacher confirmed that there was a written bomb threat on the wall.
