  • Grayson County powers to pair of baseball wins

BASTIAN –– Grayson County drilled six home runs in two days and improved to 12-3 on the year, dropping Gate City 14-5 on Monday and following up with a 20-8 trouncing of Bland County on Tuesday.

  • Carroll County improves to 13-0

HILLSVILLE –– It took Carroll County a few innings to get rolling offensively, but the Cavaliers won their 13th game without a defeat Tuesday, pulling away for a 10-1 win over Pulaski County in a River Ridge District game at CCHS.

The Cavaliers shut down the Cougars after allowing a first-inning run but led just 2-1 entering the bottom of the fourth before erupting for six runs.

  • Galax trounces Bobcats

The rematch quickly turned into a mismatch.

In a nondistrict boys’ soccer match pitting the two Group 1A state finalists from a year ago, Galax overcame another unsteady start with a furious finish and hammered Radford 7-1 Wednesday at Galax High School.

After giving up a goal before the match was five minutes old, the Maroon Tide completely shut down the Bobcats over the final 76 minutes.

  • Grayson gets past Galax

For the second time this season, Grayson County got all it could handle from Galax. For the second time, the Blue Devils came out on top.

A three-run surge in the first two innings was all the offense the Blue Devils would need, but not enough to make it comfortable as Grayson slipped past the Maroon Tide 4-1 in a Mountain Empire District softball game Friday at Mountain View Park.

  • Blue Devils win battle of unbeatens

INDEPENDENCE –– The Grayson County boys’ tennis team won for the 12th time without a loss and dealt Galax its first loss after the Tide had run up its own 12-0 mark as the Blue Devils notched a 6-3 win in a Mountain Empire District match Thursday afternoon.

  • Hawks, Devils stifle Galax

There are times during the course of the Mountain Empire District schedule when a team can get away with committing seven errors. Friday wasn’t one of those times for Galax.

Grayson County took advantage of a shaky Maroon Tide defense and put a saddle on the three-hit effort of Eric Hawks, riding it to a 6-0 MED win on a gloriously sunny afternoon at Felts Park.

  • Truck goes under tractor-trailer on I-77

A Danville man was airlifted for injuries after colliding with a tractor trailer on Interstate 77 on Tuesday.

According to State Police First Sgt. Mike Musser, authorities were called to I-77, approximately one tenth of a mile north of Exit 19 at 12:40 a.m. on Tuesday. Upon arrival, officers found a 1998 Chevy S10 pickup truck crushed underneath the rear of a tractor trailer, owned by Mercantile Solutions in Georgia.

  • Riders bring trail concerns to forest service

    By DON RICHESON, Staff

WYTHEVILLE — U.S. Forest Service officials and a Grayson County-based horseback riders group still aren’t seeing eye-to-eye following a forum last week about proposed trail closings.

But Grayson County resident Elizabeth Thomas, the president and founder of the group, MRNRA Trail Advocates Coalition, sees at least one promising sign – the plan to close most of the horse trails in Mount Rogers National Recreation Area is moving at less of a gallop than before.

  • Galax Prom 2015

Galax High School students showed off their unique styles at the 2015 prom, held May 2 at the Galax Golf Course country club.
