  • Grayson budget shortfall shrinks

    INDEPENDENCE – After recommendations from the county administrator and a few additional adjustments, Grayson County Supervisors have closed the gap in the 2013-14 budget by more than $1.2 million.
    Supervisors held their second budget work session on May 1 and began the night facing a much more manageable $240,000 deficit between projected revenues and expenditures for the FY 2014 budget.

  • Anders in stable condition after being shot by deputies

    UPDATE 5/7/13:

    Randy Lee Anders is now in stable condition, according to Grayson Sheriff Richard Vaughan. Charges are still pending the outcome of a Virginia State Police investigation of the shooting.

  • Removing obstacles to higher education

    A higher education for residents of Galax, Carroll County and Grayson County used to entail a lot of mileage and time away from work and family, not to mention unthinkable amounts of gas money.
    Today, that’s no longer the case.
    After Crossroads Institute opened in 2005, locals were able to take distance learning classes through Wytheville Community College, which offers an assortment of two-year degrees and the opportunity to transfer to even higher institutions of learning.

    After my many visits there, I always had a lingering disappointment in the back of my mind every time I was about to make my way down the long winding road out of the park – I still had yet to see the infamous wild ponies that inhabit the balds of the mountain top, which I had heard so many stories about.

  • APCo rate hike would raise bills by 1.5%

    August hearings are set on proposed rate increases sought by Appalachian Power Co.
    The State Corporation Commission said Monday that it will hold a hearing Aug. 28 on the utility’s request to recover more than $11 million in costs associated with its natural gas-fired power plant in Dresden, Ohio. The deadline for public comments is Aug. 21.
    Appalachian also is seeking to recover more than $38 million associated with installing equipment to meet state and federal environmental requirements.

  • Town listens to concerns about noisy truck brakes

    HILLSVILLE — A Hillsville citizen is asking the town council to put a stop to the use of compression release engine brakes.
    Patti Ashley approached Hillsville Town Council members during their April 22 meeting to make the request.
    “The use of these are not only very loud, but also are detrimental to the roads, structures and sidewalks,” said Ashley, who owns the Time Factory of Hillsville with her husband. “There are many communities in the United States that prohibit the use of compression braking within municipal limits.”

  • Fugitive in critical condition after being shot by deputies

    INDEPENDENCE — Police say that Randy Lee Anders had threatened to harm law enforcement officers if they tried to apprehend him, and vowed that “he would not be taken alive.”
    On Monday night, as Grayson County Sheriff’s Department deputies closed in on Anders while he hid in a basement room, police say the man drew a gun and appeared ready to back up that threat.

  • Thursday chase yields 10 charges so far

    HILLSVILLE - A Mount Airy, N.C., man faces two felony charges and eight traffic offenses after running from police in both Carroll County and in Surry County, N.C., Thursday.

    At about 1 p.m. Carroll Sgt. Bobby Lyons was traveling south bound U.S. 52 near the old tavern and observed a white BMW traveling north bound at a high rate of speed, according to Sheriff J.B Gardner. Lyons turned on the car, activated his emergency equipment and the BMW increased his speed in an effort to pull away.
