  • Schools strengthen security measures

    HILLSVILLE — New security protocols at all Carroll County Public Schools will greet visitors when the fall term starts up next week.
    It’s something that students won’t run into much — unless they’re late for school — but parents and other visitors will have to be buzzed in to the facilities at the front doors.
    Several elements have come together to make for more secure Carroll schools, including administrative office improvements that put the staff in a better position  to monitor the front entrances.

  • Wrestling team on the ropes in Carroll

    HILLSVILLE — A fan of Carroll County High School wrestling went to the mat for the team before the school board at its July meeting.
    In the midst of a realignment of grades at the high school and continuing upgrades on the heating and air conditioning system, the wrestling team has been moved out of its home of about 37 years, a heavily padded room on the second level near the gym that also had mechanical equipment in it.

  • Hall enters treasurer race in Grayson

    INDEPENDENCE — Raymond L. “Pete” Hall Jr. of Independence has announced his candidacy for treasurer of Grayson County.
    There are several contenders for the office that will be left vacant by Junior Young, who will not seek re-election as treasurer. Hall will run as an independent against Republican Paula Carrico, fellow independents George R. “Dicky” Whitaker and Stephanie Brewer and Democrat Kelly Haga, who was chosen at a caucus meeting on Tuesday.

  • Taylor, MacInnis to marry

    Ronnie and Karen Taylor of Fries announce the engagement of their daughter, April Nicole Taylor, to Ian David MacInnis, son of Brian and Kim MacInnis of Christiansburg.

    Taylor is a graduate of Radford University and is employed by Brown, Edwards & Co. CPAs.
    MacInnis is a graduate of Radford University and is employed at the NRV Regional Jail.
    A December wedding is planned.  

  • McGradys celebrate wedding anniversary

    Vesta and Herbert McGrady celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary July 6 with family and friends at a luncheon hosted by their children at the HaleW-ilkinson‑Carter Home.

    Vesta McGrady is a retired licensed practical nurse. Herbert McGrady is a retired long‑haul truck driver.
    They attend Round Knob Baptist Church.
    They have two daughters, Carolyn Frost and Gail McGrady; three granddaughters, Brooks Edwards, Bobbie Jo Watson and Christy Wheatley; and four greatgrandchildren, Peyton, Emily and Clay Edwards and Luke Watson.

  • Smiths celebrate 50th anniversary

    Kyle (Snake) and Phyllis Robinson Smith celebrated their 50th anniversary July 5.

    They have one son, Kyle Dean, and fiancée, Mandy Johnson.

  • Waddells celebrate 60th anniversary

    Everett and Betty Jo Waddell of King, N.C., celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary June 29 with a dinner at Cody Creek Restaurant in Dobson, N.C.

    The couple’s son and his wife are Sam and Vonna Waddell of Winston-Salem, N.C.
    Their grandson and his wife are Matthew and Jen Waddell and their granddaughters are Emily and Bethany Waddell. Their great-grandson is Caden Waddell and their step great-grandsons are Jackson and Charlie Laucher.
    Everett Waddell retired from Krispy Kreme and Betty Jo is a homemaker.

  • She's two

    Cassidy “Cassie” Lynne Marshall turned age 2 on July 23. Her birthday was celebrated with a cookout at the river. She is the daughter of Joseph and Chrissy Marshall.

    She is the little sister of Isabella Marshall. Grandparents are Randy and Kim Bell and Dennis and Opie Marshall. Her great-grandparents are M.C. and Irene Bell, the Late Verna Liddle , O’Neal and O’Needa Terry, and the late Virgil and Patty Marshall.
