  • 'Unfair' housing alleged

    A group of about 10 Glendale Apartments residents stood on the side of Glendale Road below the Galax housing complex on Monday to protest what they claimed to be unfair housing practices.
    Some held signs that stated, “Stop violating out 4th amendment to the constitution,” “Racism is dead...,” “Poor people have rights, too” and “This is not fair housing.”

  • Grayson residents receive warrants

    INDEPENDENCE — Some Grayson County citizens say they are upset after receiving a notice of delinquent trash fees and a copy of a civil warrant, even though they say they were not billed for garbage service.
    According to about a dozen citizens who called, e-mailed or wrote letters to the newspaper, they received a letter notifying them that their trash fee must be paid by Aug. 6, otherwise a warrant — a civil claim for money — will be issued.
    If the warrant is issued, then the citizens will have to appear in Grayson County District Court.

  • Grayson Circuit Court unseals indictments

    INDEPENDENCE — Three indictments that were sealed by a Grayson County Circuit Court grand jury on July 23 have been unsealed.
    An indictment indicates that a grand jury found evidence for a case to go to trial, and does not indicate guilt.
    Stanley D. Brewer, 46, of Fries, was indicted on five charges:
    • conspiracy to sell, give or distribute a schedule III controlled substance (hydrocodone)
    • sale, give or distribution of a schedule III controlled substance (hydrocodone)

  • The Body Shop specializes in custom autos

    The Body Shop, located at 1875 Meadow St. in Galax, opened in May to offer high-quality body work — everything from painting to building custom mold and body kits to fiberglass and metal work.
    Chris Davis, owner of the shop, specializes in rare cars, he said, as he showed the 1988 McClaren Mustang he's working on — one of only 200 of those cars made.
