  • Fries in choice location

    FRIES — A market study of the potential development of the old Washington Mills site on the New River in Fries indicates that the location is within 150 miles of 9.2 million people and 314,000 college students.

    The study was done by K.W. Poore & Associates of Richmond and is part of the town's Revitalization Master Plan, which calls for significant improvements in downtown Fries and on the mill site.

  • Vote may not have been legal

    INDEPENDENCE — The Grayson County School Board will have to re-elect a chairperson at its February meeting after the procedure used in January was deemed to be unfit according to Virginia state law.

    During the meeting held Jan. 26, two nominations were made for chairperson — former chairwoman Wynn Combs and board member Misty Cassell.

    When called to a vote, each received two from the board members present. Board member Shannon Holdaway was absent.

  • Lifetime achievement award

    INDEPENDENCE "" As did old Independence High before it, Grayson County High School has enjoyed a ton of winning over the years, and Thomas Owens has been there for a huge chunk of it. Rightfully so, a little chunk of the school now bears his name.

    Owens, a multi-sport coach at the school since 1975, received a double honor Thursday night when, in a ceremony before the Grayson-Fort Chiswell basketball game, he was inducted into the GCHS Wall of Fame and had the school’s basketball court named in his honor.

  • Galax boys clinch MED; Lady Cavs lose on buzzer-beater

    NARROWS –– Galax locked up the Mountain Empire District boys’ basketball championship, jumping to a big first-quarter lead and holding on for a 66-52 win Saturday over Narrows.

    The Maroon Tide improved to 19-2 overall, 5-1 in the district and earned an automatic spot in the Region C Division 1 playoffs as well as the top seed in the MED tournament.

    Scott Alouf hit six 3-pointers and led all scorers with 24 points for Galax. Tyler Houk and Justin Hash tossed in 15 points apiece.

    Adam Morris led Narrows (4-15, 2-5) with 14 points.

  • Galax wins MED; Cavs second in Southwest

    Galax laid claim to eight individual championships and repeated as Mountain Empire District champs in the MED tournament last week at Galax High School.

    The Maroon Tide racked up 192 team points, 40 points better than runner-up Grayson County. Fort Chiswell was third with 99 points.

    Eric Stowell (103 pounds), Ethan Campbell (112), Edu Rojas (119), Jose Rojas (130), Jose Martinez (140), Seth Criner (160), Jay Miles (189) and Dakota Cockerham (215) all won their respective weight classes for the Maroon Tide.

  • In re-vote, school board picks new chair

    INDEPENDENCE — After a procedure used in January to elect a chairperson for the Grayson County School Board was deemed to be unfit according to Virginia state law, the board held another election on Monday night.

    This time, things turned out differently.

    Misty Cassell will serve as chair of the board for 2009 after receiving three votes to former chairwoman Wynn Combs’ two.

  • Fort Chiswell spoils Grayson’s festivities, 86-68

    INDEPENDENCE –– Fort Chiswell spoiled a lot more than the first official game on the newly-dedicated Thomas Owens Court.

    In a game in which Grayson County hoped to cap a night honoring their former coach by taking another step toward a possible district title, Fort Chiswell caught fire in the second half and rallied to an 86-68 Mountain Empire District win.

  • Tide outpaces Fort, 88-75

    Cameron Frazier goes to the hoop for two of his 18 first-half points. Frazier left the game early in the second half with an ankle injury, but the Tide prevailed 88-75.Galax and Fort Chiswell played the first eight minutes of their Mountain Empire District showdown Friday night at a preposterous rate, on pace for a 132-112 final score. Even the halftime tally of 50-48 was ridiculous for a high school game. But what was truly absurd was the thought of Galax dropping back-to-back district games.

  • Cavaliers pull another step closer to title

    TAZEWELL –– Carroll County built a big cushion in the second quarter and went on to defeat Tazewell 57-51 in a Southwest District girls' basketball game Friday.

    Trailing 12-9 after eight minutes, the Cavaliers (13-5 overall, 11-0 district) outscored the Bulldogs 20-7 in the second period to take a 29-19 halftime lead.

    Lindsey Martin and Kayla Goins led Carroll County with 14 points each and Rachel Dalton dropped in 12 points. Tazewell (5-11, 3-5) got a game-high 18 points from Kelsey Sutherland.

  • Inventor harnesses wind, water

    Christopher Thomas has been making the rounds, trying to generate interest among local economic developers for his portable electricity making devices.

    Thomas and his enthusiastic twin brother Stephen — just about physically indistinguishable from Chris but for a brown ball cap and his other garments on this day — stopped in at the Crossroads Institute last week to visit with the Small Business Development Center's Dallas Garrett, Regional Economic Developer Neal Satterwhite and Carroll County's Bernie Deck.
