  • Sawyers to serve 15 years

    ROANOKE — The first defendant to be sentenced, among several Twin County residents caught in a federal drug sting, has received 15 years in prison.

    Michael Samuel Sawyers of Galax was the first of five locals to be sentenced for his role in a conspiracy to distribute more than 500 grams of a mixture containing methamphetamine.
    Sawyers appeared before Judge James Turk in the U.S. District Court Monday after entering a guilty plea to the conspiracy charge.

  • New Felts Park stage to be dedicated

     

    Construction crews met substantial completion of the new, permanent Felts Park stage a couple of weeks ago, and it is set to be dedicated on Saturday at 8 p.m. during the Galax Old Fiddlers' Convention. After the annual Poor Man's Dinner, which includes visits from various politicians, state representatives and local leaders at the picnic shelter at Felts Park, officials will take a tour of the new stage, which was built in celebration of the convention's 75th anniversary.

    No one remembers exactly who first suggested it, as members of the Galax Moose Lodge No. 733 sat around a coal stove in the old Matthews Hardware building in 1934, brainstorming ideas for a new fundraiser.
    At some point, five words signaled the beginning of an event that has become known worldwide — “Let’s try a musical program.”

     DRAPER –– Turning in a team total of 300 at Draper Valley would be good enough to win a state championship most years. But not on Mondays.

    Led by brothers Ryan and Jake Monday, Blacksburg obliterated the team scoring record and claimed its first championship in the fifth annual Draper Valley Prep Classic, held Monday at the par-72 Draper Valley Golf Club.

    The Bruins finished with a four-man total of 293, whacking 15 strokes off of the previous low team score of 308, set two years ago by Graham.

     ABINGDON –– Two local golfers finished among the top three places in the 15-18 age group as the Blue Ridge Junior Golf Tour wrapped up its 2010 season with a two-day championship July 26-27 at Glenrochie Country Club.

    HILLSVILLE — Carroll County officials finally got input from citizens on the comprehensive plan Aug. 3, but mostly from people worried the plan would turn into a zoning ordinance.
    In fact, the feedback meeting held in the Carroll County High School cafeteria became something of a debate as planners Mike Chandler and Bruce Peshoff tried to assure the more than 30 citizens that the comprehensive plan update won't necessarily lead to zoning.

    Steven Earl Mason of Pinnacle, N.C., guilty of public swearing/intoxication; pay $250 fine and $71 costs.

    Kevin Wayne Spangler celebrated his eighth birthday June 21 with a luau party with family and friends. He is the son of Lydia and Brian Spangler.

    He has a brother, Kendall. His grandparents are Patsy and Bobby Phipps and Mabel and Lee Spangler.

  • Fields, Patton to be married

    The parents of Stephanie Estella Fields and Grayson Richard Patton announced the engagement of their children.

    Fields is the daughter of Sylvia and David Fields of Galax. Paternal grandparents are the late Lannie and Lonnie Fields of Galax. Maternal grandparents are the late Ina and Paul Funk of Galax.
    Patton is the son of Tammy and Richard Patton of Fries.
    Paternal grandparents are Herman and the late Lucille Patton of Fries. Maternal grandparents are E.C. and Shirley Kemp of Hillsville and Jean Kemp of Galax.
