  • AmerLink files for bankruptcy

    RALEIGH, N.C. — Log home manufacturing company AmerLink filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last week, counting among its more than 200 creditors including Carroll County, Va., a total debt of $20 million.

    The Battleboro-based company that makes and sells log houses petitioned the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in the Eastern District of North Carolina in Raleigh Feb. 11.

  • Carroll pins hopes on stimulus funds

    HILLSVILLE — Hoping that federal stimulus funds might trickle down to Carroll County, the Public Service Authority made a cascade of decisions Feb. 9 on water and sewer projects.

    One of the goals of the federal stimulus package is creating jobs through "shovel-ready" projects.

    Authority member David Hutchins — fresh from visits with federal and state legislators in Washington, D.C., and Richmond — said nobody knew yet how the federal funds would be disbursed.

  • VDOT cuts go deeper in Grayson

    INDEPENDENCE — In an effort to keep from giving county residents false hope that more projects on the Virginia Department of Transportation's six-year plan will be complete within that time frame, VDOT has opted to not hold a public hearing regarding Grayson's plan this year.

    Matthew Cox of VDOT gave the Grayson Board of Supervisors more grim news regarding the state budget cuts at the Feb. 12 meeting.

    Cox estimated that VDOT will see a reduction of more than $2 billion in state funding for fiscal year 2009.

  • Sturgill named new Galax school chief

    The Galax School Board named Bill Sturgill as the division's new superintendent on Monday, and the former Galax High School principal began his new job the next day.

    The board also appointed Bill Sutherland, formerly assistant principal, as GHS's new principal during a short board meeting on Monday.

    Sturgill succeeds Sam Cook, who retired in December and returned to his hometown in Franklin County.

    Sturgill signed the contract for the superintendent's job during the meeting.

    SALEM –– Edu Rojas may or may not have known what he was getting into. It may take some time before it sinks in just how much he got out of it.

    In an event that celebrates its champions and potential champions like no other, Rojas overcame the hype, the pomp and a very stout opponent to win the 119-pound Group A state wrestling championship Saturday at the Salem Civic Center.

  • Chilhowie ends Grayson's season

    INDEPENDENCE –– Grayson County endured one miserable shooting slump just fine. Doing so twice was too much to hope for.

    The Blue Devils were just 3-of-19 from the floor in fading down the stretch, dropping a Region C Division 2 quarterfinal game 61-57 to Chilhowie.

  • Maroon Tide fights past Narrows

    The saying goes, “three times a charm,” unfortunately for Narrows, the third time on the court with Galax produced the exact same result as the previous two trips — a loss.

    Galax (23-2) entered the game Monday night as the No. 1 seed in the Region C Division 1 tournament and highly favored over the eighth-seeded Green Wave of Narrows (4-19).

  • No longer AMPed to be a Junior fan

    I’ve been a Dale Earnhardt Jr. fan since I joined the NASCAR fandom back in 2002, but I am beginning to think it’s time to move on. Does this have anything to do with the wreck at Daytona, you ask? Absolutely not.

    What it does have to do with is the idea that fans should not only support their driver, but also the sponsors who make them walking billboards. Do you purchase items, equipment and/or food from the sponsor of your favorite driver? If not, you may want to join me in this quest for a new driver.

  • Burris wins district hoop shoot title

    Galax Elks Lodge #2212 will have a representative in the State Elks Hoop Shoot in Charlottesville this weekend.

    Caleb Burris won the 10-11 boys’ division in the Southwest District Hoop Shoot to qualify for the state tournament.
