    District Court

    These sentences were recorded in November of 2009 in the Galax General District Court office, Galax. Sentences may be appealed:
    Steven Earl Mason of Pinnacle, N.C., guilty of public swearing/intoxication; pay $250 fine and $71 costs.

  • He's eight

    Kevin Wayne Spangler celebrated his eighth birthday June 21 with a luau party with family and friends. He is the son of Lydia and Brian Spangler.

    He has a brother, Kendall. His grandparents are Patsy and Bobby Phipps and Mabel and Lee Spangler.

  • Fields, Patton to be married

    The parents of Stephanie Estella Fields and Grayson Richard Patton announced the engagement of their children.

    Fields is the daughter of Sylvia and David Fields of Galax. Paternal grandparents are the late Lannie and Lonnie Fields of Galax. Maternal grandparents are the late Ina and Paul Funk of Galax.
    Patton is the son of Tammy and Richard Patton of Fries.
    Paternal grandparents are Herman and the late Lucille Patton of Fries. Maternal grandparents are E.C. and Shirley Kemp of Hillsville and Jean Kemp of Galax.

  • Richardson, Hash plan September wedding

    Eddie and Shelia Hash announce the engagement of their daughter, Keshia Noel Hash, to Caleb Luke Richardson.

    He is the son of Jim and Ohna Richardson.
    A September wedding is planned.

  • Stanley, Marques to marry Aug. 28

    Jennifer Renee Stanley and Oliver Nolasco Marques will marry Aug. 28 in Blacksburg at the Blacksburg Country Club.

    Stanley is the daughter of Eddie and Robin Stanley of Fries. Her maternal grandparents are Louise and the late Bobby Asbury of Fries. Her paternal grandparents are the late Hixs and Esther Stanley of Fries.
    Marques’ parents are Vitor and Thelma Marques of Norfolk.
    The couple will honeymoon in the Caribbean and reside in Christiansburg.

  • Carter Home to hold grand opening Aug. 17

    HILLSVILLE — An Aug. 17 ribbon cutting will launch the official opening of the Hale-Wilkinson-Carter Home at 3 p.m., according to foundation officials.

  • Infant in critical condition

    HILLSVILLE — A man has been charged with felony child neglect and malicious wounding after an investigation by the Hillsville Police Department regarding a report of a 24-day-old infant having been seriously injured while in the father's care, according to a press release issued Monday.
    William Ray Bobbitt, 22, of Cox Street in Hillsville, was charged after officers questioned witnesses and executed a search warrant at a residence in town.

  • Driver charged with felony hit-and-run

    HILLSVILLE — An alleged hit-and-run driver on Interstate 77 faces felony charges after striking a tractor-trailer near the 11 mile marker and leaving the scene Sunday.
    Virginia State Police Trooper Bryan Phipps was able to get the at-fault driver — identified as Tommy Mack Small, 57, of North Augusta, S.C. — to pull off onto Exit 8.

  • Driverless vehicle wreaks havoc

    A car without a driver struck two vehicles after its driver left it unattended.
    The incident occurred July 22 around noon, in the westbound lanes of East Stuart Drive between Country Club Lane and Woodview Drive, according to Galax Police Capt. James Cox.
    A 1997 Plymouth Breeze operated by Ronald G. Witt, 39, of Pulaski, became disabled and the driver parked the car against a guardrail and left on foot.

  • Fire destroys trailer

    HILLSVILLE — Hillsville Fire Department volunteers responded to a fire in a mobile home court off Virginia 100 in Hillsville at about 3:15 Tuesday morning.

    Neighbors reported the trailer had been mostly consumed at the time. They thought that the occupants of the mobile home were still moving in at the time.

    With help from Laurel Fork Fire Department, emergency personnel put out the blaze, remaining on scene for more than an hour.

    The owner of the trailer is Emory Bearden, HFD members said. The names of the people moving in were not known.
