  • Fancy Gap looks to cash in on parkway

    FANCY GAP — Public water or no, Fancy Gap business owners and community members will do what they can to get visitors to detour off the Blue Ridge Parkway.

    Owners continue to invest capital in their own business. Plans to re-open a visitor center should come to fruition by April.

    Interested parties want to organize new community events, put together a brochure about Fancy Gap, do beautification and improve curb appeal — anything they can do to get the millions of travelers that pass through the area to stop.

  • Grayson approves early retirement plan

    INDEPENDENCE — To the pleasure of several eligible school division employees in attendance last Thursday night, the Grayson County School Board approved a plan that will allow nearly 30 employees to retire years early from the division.

    The early retirement program was first discussed at last month's meeting, but the school board wanted more time and information to be sure it would save the school system money.

    Grayson Schools Superintendent Dr. Elizabeth Thomas told the board that the program would not only benefit the school system, but also the employees.

  • Veterans memorial marches forward

    After months of planning, designing, fundraising and overcoming challenges regarding the placement of the veterans monument, Galax City Council approved a resolution Monday to award an architectural and engineering services contract to Doug Williams of Galax, putting the city one step closer to building the Twin County Veterans Memorial.

    In October 2008, council approved the site for the veterans' memorial on the grounds of the Galax Public Library and decided to move forward with securing the services of a consulting engineer.

  • Galax pummells Bath, 73-44

    MAX MEADOWS -- Galax has lived dangerously as of late, trailing by 10 points or more in the second half of two of its past three games, and entering the fourth quarter in a virtual tie Monday against the No. 8 seed in the eight-team regional tournament.

    No fourth-quarter dramatics were necessary Wednesday.

    Galax dominated Bath County 73-44 in the Region C Division 1 semifinals, sending the Maroon Tide into tonight’s title game against Eastern Montgomery and, more importantly, into the state tournament for a second straight year.

  • Blacksburg nips Cavaliers

    HILLSVILLE -- Carroll County was able to pull off a dramatic win over one Montgomery County school in the Region IV Division 4 tournament. Duplicating the feat proved to be too much.

    A night after edging Christiansburg by a point, the Cavaliers fell just short of toppling Blacksburg, falling 44-41 in the semifinals Wednesday night.

    Carroll County (17-9) never led until Cydnie Cornell’s foul shot put the Cavaliers up 41-40 with 2:16 to play, but Carroll missed its next six shots from the floor and was 0-for-2 from the foul line down the stretch.

    BLAND -- When Galax knocked Bland County out of the Mountain Empire District lead two weeks ago, the Maroon Tide made a statement that it was not to be overlooked come region tournament time.

  • Blue Ridge Tour sets 2009 schedule

    Registration is now underway for the 2009 season of the Blue Ridge Junior Golf Tour. Beginning its 11th season, the schedule includes four golf academies which focus on instruction in all phases of the game, a “Golf by the Rules” clinic in which the player receives on-course guidance to play the game according the rules of golf, and six tournaments, including a season ending two-day tournament.

  • Galax to face Twin Valley in state quarters

    It still wasn’t certain as of 8:30 Monday evening exactly where Galax would play its Group A Division 1 state quarterfinal game. At least the Maroon Tide knows for whom to prepare.

    Galax will face Twin Valley in one of four first-round games set for Friday and Saturday as the state begins working its way toward its championship week, March 10-14 in Richmond. The Maroon Tide is planning on a Friday meeting with Twin Valley at 7 p.m. at Pulaski County High School.
