  • Guild's new play gets audience involved

    “Smoke on the Mountain,” a hilarious musical play that takes place in the sanctuary of the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in North Carolina during the Depression years of the late 1930s, will be performed by the Galax Theatre Guild Saturdays, Oct. 2 and 9 at 7:30 p.m., and Sundays, Oct. 3 and 10 at 2:30 p.m. at the Rex Theater in downtown Galax.

  • Vaughan indicted for fleeing drug bust

    HILLSVILLE — Two counts against a 53-year-old Galax man who allegedly fled the scene of an April drug bust were certified by the Carroll grand jury on Monday.

  • Bunn turns 90

    In celebration of the 90th birthday of Annabelle Bunn, her daughter Kathy Bunn Murray hosted a birthday party July 10 for 96 guests at Galax First Assembly of God Church. She is from a family of 10 children and had 13 children of her own over a span of 25 years.

    She has 36 grandchildren, 6 step-grandchildren, 43 great grandchildren, and 12 step-great grandchildren.
    Bunn was born in 1920 during the Depression, and her country home had to running water or electricity.

  • Turns one

    Palin Leanne Snider turned one Aug. 11. She celebrated Aug. 7 with a Princess party at Pleasant Grove Fellowship Hall with family and friends. Her parents are Curtis and Lorie Snider.

    She has an older sister, Blair Snider. Her grandparents are Danny and Linda Deskins of Dugspur and Harold and Joyce Snider of Dublin and the late Kathy Snider. Great-grandparents are Pauline Marshall of Laurel Fork and Freida Deskins of Hillsville. She has a special aunt, Holly Choate.

    Breanna Lynn McMillian celebrated her second birthday Aug. 25 at home with a Princess party with family and friends. Her parents are Glen and Rebecca McMillian of Cana.
    Her paternal grandparents are Donald and Cathy McMillian of Cana. Maternal grandparents are Brenda Carter of Cana and James Bevins of Mount Airy, N.C. Paternal grandparent is Glen McMillian of Cana and maternal grandparents are Elsie Easter of Cana and Doris Finley of Mount Airy, N.C. Special aunts are Chasity McMillian and Tina Carter, both of Cana.

    John and Aimee Canning of Austinville announced the engagement of their son, John A. Canning of Austinville, to Amy F. Creasy.
    Creasy is the daughter of Doug and Marilyn Creasy of Galax.

    INDEPENDENCE — Grayson County officials gathered Sept. 15 to kickoff the Going Green program at the Grayson County Courthouse.

  • Driver hits house, dies at scene

    TROUTDALE —A Grayson County man died in an accident on Virginia 16 near Troutdale on Sept. 16.
    State Trooper Jerry Sowers said James Stuart Handy, 64, had just left a doctor's office in Troutdale when the accident occurred at 4:05 p.m.
    Sowers said a 1995 Chevy pickup truck driven by Handy was traveling south on 16, about a mile from the doctor's office, when it ran off the right side of the highway and plowed into a residence. No one was inside the house.

  • Traffic deaths down in Va.

    Traffic deaths have declined this year across the state, according to the Department of Motor Vehicles.
    From Jan. 1 to Aug. 31, 481 people were killed this year, compared to 490 during the same time last year, according to a news release from the agency.
    This year, 159 of the deaths have happened on primary roads while 62 occurred on interstates, the agency reported.

  • Lord's Acre Sale to be held Saturday

    The annual Lord's Acre Harvest Sale — where shoppers can stock up on all kinds of fresh, fall produce, canned goods, homemade pies and handmade crafts and attend worship service — will be held Saturday in Felts Park.
    The event is sponsored by Carroll-Grayson United Workers for Christ Association. The sale is a main fundraiser for many local churches.
