  • 'Spirit Harbor' opposition continues

    INDEPENDENCE — The Grayson County Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing regarding a proposed 252-site senior recreation park in Mouth of Wilson tomorrow, Thursday — and more opposition continues to be heard.

    Brian Hyder is a landowner in the Fox Knob Community, and has property that adjoins Fox Knob Road for about four-tenths of a mile. He is one of many neighbors that are worried about the potential impact “Spirit Harbor” would have on the community.

  • Independence backs Spirit Harbor plan

    INDEPENDENCE — Town council members on Tuesday said a proposed Christian recreational park for seniors that could be constructed seven miles from the town limits would boost Independence's economy.

    "Spirit Harbor" managing member Joe Weddington described the controversial project during a town council meeting Tuesday.

    Several Grayson residents and neighbors to the proposed 148-acre park site have voiced opposition to the developers' plans.

  • A big plate of pork

    We've heard a lot of legislators griping lately about the amount of "pork" — spending that benefits a few, usually in the sponsoring politician's home district — in the new federal stimulus package.

    But one man's pork is another's prize. Think about this: all the dire local needs in the Twin Counties — better roads, money for school construction and teachers, funding for utility projects to drive the economy — probably seem pretty porky to politicians from other parts of the nation, but this is the stuff we beg for.

    Resort could cause problems

    We have been following the reporting on the zoning variance request for the trailer park on Foxwood Lane. We are in full support of the planning commission’s decision to not grant a special use permit.

    Our concern isn’t that there will be a shortage of angelic retirees, all of whom will spend their time in church and donating to local charities but, the overall long-term usage of land in Grayson County has to be considered.

  • Take what you can get

    Extensive work and marketing has gone into the redevelopment of the old Washington Mills site in Fries, and on Feb. 1, requests for proposals were sent throughout the country.

    The requests mandate that a prospective developer be willing to complete at least three of the projects on the 13.3-acre site, and invest a minimum $6 million.

    We urge the project's management team — comprised of Blue Ridge Crossroads Economic Development Authority, the Town of Fries and Virginia Department of Housing & Community Development — to seriously consider all proposals.

  • 'Spirit Harbor' loses Round 1

    INDEPENDENCE — Developers hoping to bring a 252-site senior recreational park to Mouth of Wilson were knocked out in round one of the application process last week, when the Grayson County Planning Commission recommended that the Board of Supervisors deny a special use permit application.

    At the Feb. 17 meeting, developers brought the commission extensive plats, water and sewer details and road elevation surveys to answer any questions about the proposed 148-acre Spirit Harbor park off Fox Wood Lane near the New River.

  • VDOT to close Hillsville residency

    RICHMOND — The Virginia Department of Transportation will lay off 450 hourly employees across the commonwealth next month as a first step in reducing staffing costs.

    Heidi Coy, VDOT spokeswoman for the Salem district that includes Carroll County, said the Hillsville residency is one of the 25 offices proposed to be cut.

    After the closing, the Martinsville VDOT office would oversee Carroll. Floyd County — now covered by the Hillsville residency — would be overseen by the Christiansburg office.

  • Charges filed in fatal I-77 accident

     HILLSVILLE — The 39-year-old truck driver allegedly at fault in a fatal accident near the 22 mile marker on Interstate 77 Feb. 17 has been charged with involuntary manslaughter and reckless driving.

    Brian Scott Grubb, 39, of Anderson, S.C., has been charged by Virginia State Police Trooper J.H. Bledsoe, who investigated the accident.
