    INDEPENDENCE — Three of seven Grayson County schools met federal Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) benchmarks, according to 2010-11 data released by the Virginia Department of Education this month.

    Agnes Marie Lundy Cox will celebrate her 97th birthday Aug. 19.

    Marella Cheyenne Huff will celebrate her second birthday Aug. 19. A party in her honor will be held Aug. 20 at her grandparent’s home in the Fairview community.

    She is the daughter of Joshua B. and Jennifer D. Huff. Paternal grandparents are Gary and Brenda Huff. Maternal grandparents are John E. and Mary B. Davis. Paternal great-grandparents are Inez Huff and Alma Lee Sizemore and the late Ed Huff and Kyle Sizemore. Maternal great-grandparents are John B. (Bill) and Shirley Davis and the late John W. and Rubye Boyer, all of Galax.

  • Combs, Calfee to be married

    Mr. and Mrs. Sherman Combs Jr.  of Sugar Grove announced the engagement of their daughter, Sarah Renee, to William Quinton Calfee of Wytheville.

    Combs is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Grover “Joe” and Gaye Pugh of Troutdale and Sherman Gayle Combs Sr. and the late Ora May Combs of Sugar Grove.
    Calfee is the son of Charles B. Calfee and the grandson of William A. and the late Frances Calfee of Wytheville.
    Both are graduates of Wytheville Community College and reside in Wytheville.

  • Quake shakes Twin Counties

    An earthquake centered in Virginia around 1:51 p.m. today was felt for about 20 seconds throughout the Twin Counties and up and down the East Coast.

    It was the strongest quake in Virginia in 114 years, according to the U.S Geological Survey, and the second-strongest in the state's history.

    The USGS is reporting a 5.8 magnitude quake felt from North Carolina to New York City and in some part of Canada. The earthquake's epicenter was near Louisa and Mineral, between Charlottesville and Richmond, about 3.7 miles below the surface.

  • VDOT to hold ribbon-cutting for Hillsville bypass

    HILLSVILLE — The Virginia Department of Transportation will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony Aug. 30 to commemorate the opening to traffic of the remaining 3.7 miles of the 5.2-mile U.S. 58 Hillsville bypass.
    The public ceremony is at 11 a.m. on the new bypass near its east interchange with U.S. 58 business. The event will be a ceremonial road opening — the new road is expected to be opened to traffic today, Wednesday, if weather and work schedule permit.
